  The Giving Tree!
Recently I received the following message from Jan:
"As you may know, each year Blank Children's Hospital sponsors a Festival of Trees & Lights in Des Moines during the week of Thanksgiving.  For the first time this year "The Giving Tree" will be part of the Festival.  This tree is a project of the Iowa Lions Eye Bank and will honor eye donors of 2008. The Giving Tree is to be decorated with hundreds of handmade porcelain ornaments.  Each ornament will be personalized with an engraved plate identifying the name of a donor.  I thought you might like to know there will be an ornament on this tree to honor Larry (corneas were donated). This year's festival will be held November 25-29 at the Polk County Convention Complex in Des Moines.   More information about the festival can be found at www.festivaloftrees.com" Jan      What A Super Idea. Check It Out!!

Coon Boys Score BIG!!
Randy, Tanner and Tanner's other brother Tanner (eh, Travis) went raccoon hunting on the Defiance farms this past weekend. They nailed five, four on the Crawford farm. When they took the furs to a furrier in Maple River, they were told about a BIG COON contest that they have run for the past ten years. So the boys entered two and guess what? They are now in FIRST AND SECOND place!! Their Big Coon was just a pound or so from the ALL TIME STATE RECORD!! It checked in at an enormous 31+ pounds!! (Pure Iowa corn fed!) The contest people have never had an entry over 26 pounds in ten years!! Wow, the monsters were found under the porch of that old fallen down house. First place prize is $100. The gang has collected for the furs. Their pheasant hunting adventure near Jefferson the weekend before was not so productive. It was the end of the line for some clay pigeons......Believe It Or Not
Believe It Or Not!!
Zach, (Tim's), has started every game for the Roland-Story Junior High football team at Defensive Back and Kick Returner. The last game of the season, the starting running back was sick, so Zach played offense for the first time. He scored 3 touchdowns! as R-S finished off a fine season. Way to go Zach!!
Wow!! Congrats To Todd And GO STORM!!
The Indoor Football League (IFL) has officially approved the transfer of ownership of the Sioux Falls Storm from KT, LLC to Tytan Enterprises, LLC. Sioux Falls businessman Todd Tryon has purchased the Sioux Falls Storm.
Tryon will act as CEO, President and General Manager for the team. "The Sioux Falls Storm is one of the most prized organizations in our league, and we are very excited about Tryon's fresh ownership continuing on the teams past success and taking the Storm to a whole new level", stated FL commissioner Tommy Benizio. Tryon brings credibility to the Storm with his experience as a successful businessman in the Sioux Falls area. In 2003 he opened Tryon Gym, the first 24-hour gym in Sioux Falls. Tryon Gym, Inc. has grown into 9-locations.
"This is the most successful franchise in indoor football history," said Tryon. "I'm excited to have the opportunity to build on that legacy." Todd originally joined the organization as a member of the Sioux Falls Cobras of the IFL in the 2000 season. He ended his career with the Storm in 2004. Tryon stayed on as a Wide Receiver coach for the 2005 through 2008 seasons. Tryon Gym, Inc. has been a long running partner of the Sioux Falls
Storm. The Storm will play 14 regular season games in 2010. Sioux Falls Paper........I am sure Todd's expertise at running his Tryon Fantasy Football Team has prepared him for great success in this new endeavor. Go Storm!

State Playoffs Begin!!
The 2009 Iowa Football Playoffs begin tonight and we have 3 Tryons participating. Eric's Van Meter Bulldogs play Bedford. Brett's (Offensive Coach) ADM team plays at Le Mars and Max, yes Tammi and Craig's son, is the ONLY Freshman suiting up for the Vinton varsity as they play a tough New Hampton team. Max is a QB and led his 9th graders to an outstanding season. Congrats to all!! The G-R Wildcats also play @ Stanton.

Christmas Is Set For Sunday, December 6th!!
Maxine was nice enough to reserve the church in Glidden for the annual Tryon Christmas Celebration. As always, there was talk about changing the date, but it is so hard to find a good one. So mark your calendars and try to make a big effort to join us. It seems to get harder and harder to get together as the years go by.......More details to follow....

Kansas Super Scramble!!
Last weekend, the BIG FOUR golfers of RT, JJ, Tyler and DBT drove all night to Lawrence, Kansas to play in Rick Weaver's Baker University Super Scramble Golf Tournament. Over 240 golfers battled the elements in their attempt for eternal. glory. One golfer won a $1000 with a hole in one. The weatherman predicted a high of 53 degrees, but he kind of goofed. It never got above 41....Just missed his forecast. The wind chill was in the mid thirties and lower at times. Needless to say the White Buffalo (JJ) Posse MANNED UP and actually won a few prizes and finished below par. The team colors this year was a big improvement over last year's pink shirts. The Posse wore black Iowa Hawkeye sweatshirts in honor of their undefeated football season and victory over Michigan.. ISU clothes were ready in case the CLONES defeated the Kansas Jayhawks, which they almost did. It was fun, but cold. Jerry (huddled most of the time in the golf cart with his blankie) never did recover after a huge symbol was blasted during his back swing.  (JJ also threw a gooey, half eaten hot dog at our opponents! Nice heh?) DBT vows next year to eat a Polish sausage for each hole we birdie. A big thanks to Coach Weaver for his great hospitality.

Trucking With The Highwayman!!
I got the following from RT:
"Wow...  I was @ a truck stop today getting a flat tire fixed on my truck trailer near Omaha & saw the Oak Ridge Boys RV getting fixed too!  I went over & talked to 2 of the 4 singers.  They are heading to Branson for their next concert.  Believe or not they all signed a 8" x 10" colored photo for me in person!!  The perks of a trucker!  I took a pix of my photo with my cell phone. "
Email #2..........."4 truck Windstar convoy heading to Washington DC (Monday) taking this ISU student solar cabin for competition.  20 house-cabins world wide are entered.  We unload the cabin in 6 sections & leave DC, but go back in 3 weeks 2 load & bring back this solar cabin 2  Iowa.  The Iowa DNR is buying this project which had a $700,000 budget.  Lots of high tech equipment used & the project is judged on energy efficiency!  Go Clones!"
The Highwayman has been all over the place the last 21 days or so. Miami, New York (twice) Dallas, Washington Dc etc. He is finally home for a couple of days rest.

BIG GAME MOVED TO TUESDAY!

Four Generations!!
GT and Sandy went to the Chicago area to get acquainted with Jillian Grace Tryon, the newest member of their family and GT's great-grand daughter. Pictured are GT, Jeff, Josh and Jillian. Wow, I still cannot believe that Jeff is a Grandpa!
Great Fun At The Hawkeye Game!!
Now it was was BE BOLD, WEAR GOLD day at Nile Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City last Saturday and guess what idiot was outside the stadium selling BLACK T-shirts? Notice the pictures below and you guess who the CLOWN might be....Poor UNI Panther fans, and I know we have quite a few in the family, they have to really be depressed. What an exciting way to kickoff the season. (Oh, the gang did sell over half of their T-shirts)
Big Time Hail Damage!!
Adam, Kevin's son, has his pickup ruined by hail on Interstate 35 a couple of weeks ago. Major damage to the windshield and to the  body. The picture does not do it justice. Fortunately, there were no injuries. Tough luck Adam, looks like a great truck.

Tryons @ The Iowa State Fair!!
I got the following email from Doug:
Guess who we spotted while sitting at the Bill Riley stage at the State Fair on Thursday?  It was Gaylord, Suzie, and her two girls!  I've attached a photo.  The Team Tryon T-Shirts gave them away.  Sure was great to see Suzie --- been a few years. Also, that evening as we were finding our seats for the Jeremy Camp/Steven Curtis Chapman concert at the Grandstand, Cousin Ron (Official "T") spied us and came over to say hello.  He was there working security for the event.  It's always fun to see family at the fair! Doug, Jodie, and Melody (Cub Reporters)

Highwayman Is Trucking!!
RT is bopping down the road with a 23 ton toy that he is hauling from St. Louis to Lincoln. He will be at the State Fair, Sunday with his boys.
Pictures Of Jillian And Proud Parents and Grand Parents!!

Welcome Jillian Grace Tryon!!

What A GREAT Idea!!
This Thursday is the 11th Annual Glidden Booster Club Golf Outing at the Coon Rapids golf course. Click Here For More Information. It is a major fund raiser for Glidden athletics. It is part of the Glidden Alumni celebration that is Friday night. Well, Jerry came up with a great idea and has created a Glidden Wildcat golf towel that will be given out to all of the golfers. Over 75 are expected. Pictured is the art work and the towel itself. The great idea is the towels are being given out compliments of  the Tryon family. We had 10 kids (I would not say students) graduate from GHS and I think we all owe the school and the community quite a bit. Both have been major forces in our lives. JJ should have some of the towels left over, so contact him if you would like one. I think they are almost too nice for the golf bag and look great on the wall. Click Here To Contact JJ. No guarantee how many will be left over. Nice job, Jerry!!
Jenna And Brett's BIG DAY!!
A beautiful day and a very beautiful wedding. Congrats to Jenna, Brett and their parents. Everyone had a wonderful time as it was a joyous occasion and great fun seeing family and friends. We all wish the happy couple the best. They are currently celebrating in Jamaica. It was great seeing so many that could make it and CLICK HERE for a short slide show. Pictures by Julie and a few by WW.
TEAM TRYON Rocks!!
Actually, both Team Tryons covered themselves with glory (and other stuff) at the Coon Rapids 4 Person Best Ball Golf Tournament this past Sunday. Team One, consisting of Dick, Randy, Bill (retired Nevada teacher) and an old farmer from Coon who looked a lot like "Junior" from Hee Haw (we picked up 10 minutes before we teed off, complete with big overalls. He was sitting at the bar, drinking at 8:45 a.m.) The BEST Tryon Team shot a BLAZING 10 under par 60 and finished in Fourth Place in the Championship Flight!! Only three shots from winning the entire tournament! Tryon Team Two, consisting of Jerry, Tyler, Keith Chapman (old Glidden coach) and a friend of Tyler, who hit booming drives, shot 9 under par and finished in 5th place over all. So  two TRYON teams finished in the top five, Wow!! But that is only the beginning of the fun and excitement.........
Wild Red Bull Randy Ended Up In The Lake!! Yes, in the lake!! In the middle of the tournament, after hitting our tee shots, our column of golf carts took off and headed down the fairway. While picking up our drives, we noticed there was NO Randy. He, and his golf cart, were back IN THE LAKE making a noise that sounded like a pregnant duck. His golf clubs were under water and RT was waist deep in the dirtiest, scummiest water I have ever seen!! (and I was a farm boy) It was quite a site!! My teacher friend Bill said, "Well, You don't see that every day!" and he was right. The group behind us was there too and RT was trying to push the cart out of the water, with no luck. He had taken his shoes off and stepped into ankle deep water, but then stepped into a hole and ended up NECK DEEP in the type of water you see in pictures of Somalia. Complete with algae, flies, frogs and oily goo. We at first thought he had gone in looking for cheap golf balls, but no, the entire golf cart was in the pond and starting to sink. Luckily, the group behind us had a tow rope and they towed the cart out with Randy standing in the lake, pushing from behind. Needless to say, RT was totally soaked and stayed that way the rest of the tournament. He would slosh around the greens and was dragging moss from his cart the rest of the day. He seemed to smell like one of those Iowa cattle lots, but maybe that was just the wind from the Garst farms. He looked like the Creature From The Black Lagoon and I know he went to church afterward in Des Moines, the poor guy. He tried to blame the accident on poor little Sam (Tammi's) who was riding with him and Sam never got wet at all. The rest of the day Randy was teased by other golfers who accused him of peeing his pants, etc. RT was not phased, however, and helped lead the TOP Tryon Team to VICTORY!! We all had super fun, the weather was beautiful and the laughs were plentiful. Another great and memorable time was had by all!! Anyone looking for a used, electric golf cart?
Lynn Breaks His Leg!!
While playing for the South Dakota state slow pitch championship, Lynn breaks his leg in two places. Well, actually, he did not break it. Lynn was playing first base and an IDIOT slid into first in an attempt to get on base and he piled into Lynn's leg,  breaking the tibia and fibula bones!! This happened in the Championship game, on Sunday, in Pierre, South Dakota. (Home of the infamous BIG BOUNCE of baseball card show days). The TRYON GYM team finished in second place. Lynn rode an ambulance back to Sioux Falls. Lynn has now qualified as a contender for most broken bones while playing softball by an over-aged Tryon, but he is a long way from knocking Donnie (AKA  as the  World's Oldest Shortstop.) off as the all around champion. Tough Luck, Lynn. Get well, soon.
Congrats To Sara!!
Sara gets her Masters Degree in Family Consumer Science, August 8th at Iowa State. Way to go Sara!! We are very proud of you!!

Ted Edwards Is Rushed To The Hospital!!
Ted Edwards, the Brother in Law of Sally, collapsed last night at his home around 11:00 p.m. in Carroll. His condition is very serious. Ted was a long time teacher and coach at Carroll HS. Ted is a great friend and supporter of the Tryons and our hearts and prayers go to him and his family.

Pictures From The Densmore Reunion!!
A couple of weeks ago, some of the Densmores met in Guthrie Center for a picnic. The weather did not cooperate, but they found a great indoor place to enjoy each other's company. A great time was had by all. Photos by Dale. (As always, click to enlarge)

About Apollo 11
When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon 40 years ago, it was a huge technological feat. Here are a few fun (and little-known) facts about the mission:

  • The computers on the mission had less processing power than a cellphone does today.
  • Neil Armstrong's "one small step" was actually a 3.5 foot jump to the lunar surface.
  • Planting the American flag (made by Sears, by the way, which got no product placement credit at the time) was a difficult task. The moon's surface is rock covered by a thin layer of dust. So Aldrin and Armstrong had to jam the flagpole in as far as they could for the pictures.

Janet Wins Golf Championship!!
Janet won the Homewood League Women's Golf Championship this past week, by firing a wonderful 81 !! This is the second time that she has won this tournament, the other time was a couple of years ago. I guess all that "advice" from Coach Dale is really paying off!! Congrats to Janet, Woo Woo!!

Where Were You?
July 20th, 1969, when Man first walked on the moon? I was at the Lake cabin of Merle and Jeannette Stevens, waterskiing. Yes they had BIG MOTORS in those days. I know Mom and Dad were there and I assume Randy and Nancy were too. I was 19 and just returned from my "Tour" of the Far East. Bruce and Donna were there, entertaining, and we would go in and out of the cabin waiting for the big moment on TV and were guessing what the first words would be. I remember it seemed to take forever and the TV pictures were not very good. The camera appeared to be mounted on the ladder and you could kind of see the boots. It took a TV anchorman to tell you when it actually happened. This was the greatest achievement of the 20th century and probably greatest in the history of mankind. Do you know what the greatest achievement of the 19th century was? A hint: it happened almost exactly 100 years before the moon landing, July of 1869. CLICK HERE For The Answer. Now for all of you conspiracy people who believe that it is all fake. Did you know that with these super telescopes today, you can actually see part of the landing craft and other debris left behind on the moon? End of argument, unless you are Whoopi Goldberg or a member of the Grassy Knoll Society.....Reply from Donna: "Thanks for the great memories--of July 1969! We had just returned from our 3 years in Germany!!!! We were all pretty happy! I had just signed on to work at the bank in Storm Lake-and Bruce was signed up to return to BV!! There was a small, portable TV at the cabin, black and white!-but we didn't care! We were excited to watch those first steps on the moon! We were driving a very old maroon rambler convertible, that we brought over the ocean!"

Great News!!
Tammi has been hired as a full time teacher in the Vinton School District. She will teach 2nd grade. Congrats to Tammi who has been subbing a lot lately.
Congrats To Michael And Courtney!!
On their wedding day, Sunday, July 19th. Cindy and Mike Tryon are the wedding parents of their oldest son Michael and his new bride, Miss Courtney Teel of Illinois. Michael is Sally and Bill's grandson.. Click Here for the link to their wedding website. You can read about how they met in college, view pictures, sign their guestbook and follow their plans on their website. Best wishes to Michael and Courtney and a big Congrats to Cindy and Mike!!

Densmore Picnic This Sunday!!
I received the following from Diane:  "Skip is back in Iowa for a visit.  So we're having a Densmore picnic at Guthrie Center Park, Sunday July 12 around noon.    Bring covered dish & whatever else you'd like. Denny & Pat  will help with the hamburger.  (Denny's got a small portable grill)  If you're coming, please let Pat know for a head count for burgers.  prslusher@hotmail.com. Skip & Pat will furnish the paper plates, plastic silverware, napkins, cups. Hope to see you there!" Please let Pat know, sounds like a good time to me.

Doug Receives Fantastic Award!!
Last week, Doug was awarded the VERY prestigious Fred W. Gottschalk Memorial Award. Doug, Jodie and Melody flew out to Idaho to take part in the presentation. CLICK HERE to read about the award's history. The 2009 Fred W. Gottschalk Memorial award is from the Forest Products Society (of which Doug has been a member since 1978). "The Gottschalk Award has a long and hallowed history dating back to 1966.  The purpose of the award is to bestow the Society's highest recognition on an individual who has served the Society with distinction and dedication." WOW!! Doug also was awarded the membership rank of "Fellow" by the Society of Wood Science and Technology (of which he has been a member since 1980). To top it all off, a colleague from the University of Maine completely surprised Doug and Jodie by paying their entire (and expensive) hotel bill for the week!! Way To Go Doug!!. (Now we all know this is just a front to hide his REAL occupation of working covertly for the shadow government. Every see 24?) Pictures are of Doug and Melody at a place every REAL football fan should know. (Melody is STUNNED when she  hears that her Dad was honored in such a big way!!) CLICK HERE for the main web site.

Yes, Jerilyn Was Surprised!!
Last Thursday there was a surprise retirement celebration for Jerilyn's 30 years of working at the bank. There was a big turnout and a great time by all who attended. People came from as far away as California and Texas to pay their respects. Jerilyn was totally surprised as JJ did a great job of organizing everything. Congrats to Jerilyn and Jerry!!

Don't Forget About The
Fourth Of July Celebration!!

We hope to make this year's celebration by the lake the BEST ever, so make plans to attend!! Donna would like people to let her know if they are coming, so she can make arrangements, so PLEASE email her at bsunset@netins.net. Jim and Nancy H are planning on attending as are many, many more. Please make a big effort and ALL are welcome. Picnic starts at noon, it is potluck, bring your own plates/forks/cups etc, lemonade will be provided as well as a little kids pool. We all need to have fun together so mark those calendars!! This is always the social event of the year, hope to see you there! The more the merrier!! Be alert as this this could get cancelled because of the rains!!
Golf Tuesday?
Danny, Donnie and David are coming down to golf at The Hill on Tuesday and as always, anyone is welcome to join us. We will tee off at 11:00 a.m @The Hill, near Grand Junction. Dick and Dale will be there too. Anyone else? Come join us for a great time.

New Calf Arrives.....
Gwen and Johnny just had a new, baby calf born this week. This is really good news as the father is that super bull that Johnny sold and it is now bucking in the PBR rodeos! (Cloud King) The new calf is a little heifer and everyone is doing fine. It was born out in the middle of a pasture, so the picture is not so good because no one can get very close.

Believe It Or Not.......
Tyler, who manages the Coon Rapids golf course, has a big bowl of golf balls that the mowers find, then they resell them to the golfers. Well, the other day, he noticed a Titlist golf ball with the hand written initials of LT on it. Yes, it was from our very own LT. Written in his classic trade mark way. Now is the Believe It Or Not the fact that one of his golf balls was found over a year and a half later? or the fact that he played a new, expensive Titlist ball?! You make the call. Believe It Or Not.

Shiloh Boys Complete Their Mission!!
Yes, the Shiloh Boys (DBT and WW) are back from exploring numerous Civil War battlefields and other historical sites in Tennessee and Northern Georgia. It was a trip for the ages. After many months of research and planning the Boys headed South looking for the ghosts of America's past. Stomping and chopping their way around the Battles of Franklin, Stone's River, Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain with just a canteen (full of pop), hardtack, bacon and coffee, it took REAL stamina and physical prowess to pull it off as the temperature was over 90 with high humidity most of the time. (That is what those hours of jogging, sit ups and healthful meals are all about!) Of course, we did hear snickers as we marched in our Tryon Gym T-shirts. I wonder how long before Todd offers to pay us not to wear them? After days in the brush, the Shiloh Boys staggered their way to Jim and Nancy's house of pleasure and rested up for the trip home. Nancy and Jim are such wonderful hosts, it was very hard to leave their superb hospitality. Some highlights were:
*Standing on the hill where General John Bell Hood ordered the bloodiest charge of the Civil War.
*Exploring the basement of Carter House where 30 civilians spent 14 hours huddled in shear terror, while the battle was hand to hand all around them. Then after the battle, the house  became a field hospital and they had to listen to the shrieks and cries of all the amputations as blood dripped down on them thru the floorboards.
*Visiting the plantation where 4 Confederate generals lay dead on the back porch.
*Walking the grounds of Hell's Half Acre, The Ditch of Death and The Slaughter Pen.
*Standing on the spot where Lincoln's brother in law was killed. He was a Confederate General from Kentucky and his widow went to live in the White House!
*Directing artillery fire on top of Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, Tennessee.
*Sitting at the table, eating breakfast, talking politics, as deer and fawn played outside the Hulsebus home.
*Driving around the winding roads of Tennessee as Jim, who just had one cataract removed, was having a little trouble with depth perception as he showed us the sites of Fairfield Glade at warp speed.
*But, the big highlight was seeing WW (after months of research) find the EXACT spots where his Great, Great, Great Grandpa fought for the 92nd Illinois at Chickamauga (the 2nd largest battle ever fought in North America). This regiment was part of Wilder's Brigade, also known as The Lightning Brigade. This was possibly the BEST fighting brigade in the entire Federal Army as they had the new Spencer Rifles, which allowed the rapid firing of 7 shots as compared with the old muzzle loading guns most others used. They seemed to be at the focal point of many battles.
Here are a few pictures and look for slide shows soon......
(ever notice how WW wears the same shirt, day after day after day? That's part of the Shiloh Boy tradition!!)

Believe It Or Not!!

Eric set up a fund raising golf tournament in Norwalk for his football program last week. The first ever Blue and White Classic. It was a BIG success with lots of entries (over 90), lots of prizes and beautiful weather. The only problem?......he WON his own tournament!  It was a two person best ball tournament...men's, women's, and co-ed teams.  He and his lovely partner, Shonna, won the co-ed division....AND tied the men's team's winning score......AND he got the award for longest drive of the day!  Boy did he catch some flack! .Rumor is that Shonna's back is sore because she carried Eric around the course.  Believe It Or Not!!

Super Time In Glidden!!
Special thanks to Sandy, Jack, Max, JJ and Jerilyn for hosting the Memorial Day picnic in Glidden this past Monday. Great food, great weather and some good stories. It is so fun to "go home" to Glidden. Grand daughter Alexis heard how beautiful Glidden was all the way there and when she first saw it, she exclaimed, "Sweet Potato Pie!!". Huh? She said she heard that on TV. Then she screamed when she recognized where we have Christmas (the church) and asked where Santa was. The cemetery and the graves were beautiful.  As always, it was great seeing everyone. It is always good to have an excuse to come back home. I sure had fun bragging up the town, the school, the city park and the old houses we grew up in. Getting Alexis hooked on lemon ice cream was a real treat for both of us. It was a super day.

Looks Like A Nice Turnout For Memorial Day!!
I hear quite a few are heading to Glidden for the Memorial Day get together. Some may not arrive until 1:00, but most will be starting right after the ceremony. Try to make it as it is a great way to celebrate the end of school and the start of summer!  They have a nice set up whether it is rain or shine and the park is just a block away for the kids. The Folks always cherished Memorial Day and this year Sandy, Jack and Maxine are hosting a family barbeque in Sandy and Jack's back yard. So mark your calendars for Monday, May 25 at Glidden. The official ceremony in Glidden starts at 11:00 a.m. at the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery and afterwards we will meet at Sandy's and fire up the grill afterward Sandy will supply the hamburgers and dogs and Maxine will have her famous potato salad ready to eat. You need to bring ONE dish, your own drink and you need to RSVP to Sandy so she has an idea of how many will attend. CLICK HERE to send a quick email to Sandy. No need to attend the ceremonies if you are doing that somewhere else, you can always go out to the cemetery afterwards. Just show up sometime after the services. Remember how the Folks loved to picnic with the family at the Glidden park? Well this looks like another great tradition to continue again. Please make an effort to enjoy some time in Glidden with family and friends. See you there!!

Birthday Bash!!
To celebrate Dick's birthday, and after playing a round of golf,  the Highwayman treated DBT, Gwen, Johnny, Alexis and Cassidi to a REAL cowboy feast at the Texas Roadhouse in West Des Moines. Great time with great food and it was really fun to be there with Johnny and the Cowgirls!! Country music, unlimited rolls, peanuts on the floor, my kind of place. Thanks to RT for making it so special!! Needless to say, our little group does not eat out very often and it was quite a treat!

Reminder, Jenna's Shower Is Saturday!!
Just a reminder that the bridal shower for Jenna Sandersfeld is this Saturday.  Shonna, Sherry, Kim, and Jan are hosting a bridal shower for Jenna on Saturday, May 23 at 1:30 p.m. in Van Meter.  Jenna is registered at Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.  We look forward to Jenna joining the family when she and Brett tie the knot on August 1.
Believe It Or Not......

Memorial Day In Glidden!!
The Folks always cherished Memorial Day and this year Sandy is offering to host a family barbeque in her and Jack's back yard. So mark your calendars for Monday, May 25 at Glidden. The official ceremony in Glidden starts at 11:00 a.m. at the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery and afterwards we will meet at Sandy's and fire up the grill. Sandy will supply the hamburgers and dogs and Maxine will have her famous potato salad ready to eat.

Golfers Have Great Time At Coon Rapids!!
Two Teams of Tryons enjoyed the weather and the golf last Saturday at Coon Rapids. It was a four person best ball with 8 inch cups. The team of Jerry, Tyler, Lynn and I.M. Ringer shot an UNBELIEVABLE 14 under par, 56 and finished third out of 24 teams, Wow!! The other team just could not get the birdies going and shot a rather dull 66. That  was the Over-The-Hill-Gang of DBT, Dale, Randy and Dale's buddy Bill. The shortest drive of the day went to Randy with Tyler a close second. The highlight of the day was Lynn;s dance/showing off to his girl friend on the tee box of hole number four. It appeared to be a mix of break dancing with some howling type of rap music. He claimed he had a pain or some type of sudden attack, but he seemed to play much better golf after the spell. In fact, Lynn swung so hard on the first tee shot that one of his tattoos fell off. It was a great time with great weather.

Believe It Or Not!!
The Highwayman (RT) just picked up a load of four tractors in Georgia and is delivering them to Cecil (our buddy who owns The Hill golf course) in Grand Junction, Iowa. Talk about a coincidence!!

Cousin Diane Is Featured In The Des Moines Register!!
Here is a link to this fascinating story, JUST CLICK HERE. Diane has also been researching the Densmore family background and had this to report: "I just returned yesterday from a week researching in Salt Lake City and came home with a suitcase full of paper.  Now I need to start putting it all together.  I came up with some interesting tidbits:  like  Jason (J.J.) Green lived in a log cabin in 1855 in Allegany County, NY & they had a baby son John, whom I had never found before, who didn't survive until the next census in 1860.   Also found Silas Miller probate (John Milton Miller's father).  It lists the inventory of his estate, including "one old horse".  And, maybe, just maybe I have found a lead for Phinious Dunsmore's father (Phinious was Leroy's father), but there's much work to be done on that." Keep up the great work, Diane!!

Believe It Or Not!!
Dale comes home from his golf game, and his wonderful wife Janet asks if he had a good time.
"No," Dale said. "In fact, it was the worst day of my life!"
"Harry dropped dead of a heart attack on the 9th hole!"
"Sympathetic Janet says, "Oh, poor Harry! And that must have been awful for you!"
Dale replies, "You're telling me! For the whole back nine, it was 'Hit the ball, drag Harry; Hit the ball, drag Harry...'"

The AMAZING Adventures Of The Highwayman!!
(Click the button to enjoy RT's theme song while you are reading)
I am heading to Maryland now with a load out of Chicago.  Wow...coast to coast in one week!  I will be at 8,000 miles in 12 days and as you might know I get paid by the mile :)  When I was driving through Wyoming last week I saw an old horse in the fields and it looked just like "Mr. Ed" the one who bucked Warren off a longggg time ago!  I followed the Snake river through Idaho (this is the one we went down river rafting in the Grand Tetons)  I was stopped 4 times due to blocked interstate weather travel!  One time at a truck stop, I opened my truck door and the big winds sucked money out of my driver's door pocket and money flew everywhere in the cab.  One bill flew outside and I chased it thru out the parking lot and finally stepped on it.  It was a $100 billl.  Lucky me as the winds were 50+ mph.  In Oregon, I had the worst snowy driving as I was going up a mountain pass and it started to snow & snow & snow.  Warning signs were flashing to "chain up".  Several trucks did, but sap ass RT chose not to.  Going down the mountain was the tough part as it is hard to keep the truck going slow.  Gaining speed I came upon a real sign that said "dead mans pass!". This did not help any!  Coming back again through Wyoming at night my truck trailer had a flat tire!  Try driving through the mountains at night, half asleep, with a 80,000 lb. load and have a tire blow!  I drove slowly with my flashers on and made it to the next town:  Rock Rapids...this is where we had 2 baseball card shows 20 years ago  (White Mountain Mall) Trucking is fun for me as I get to see many places I have not seen.  It's a lonely life, but Gunner (my dog) keeps me entertained.  Trucking is hard work and I am not the typical 300 lb. trucker as I watch what I eat and have lost 25 lbs so far due to the hard work. Just an update to my followers out there!  Thanks for caring.,,,,,RT
If you bought it, a trucker probably brought it!
Comedy Club Is Sold!!
Dan, Dave and Donnie have sold the Funny Barn Comedy Club part of their business in Spirit Lake. They still have the Sports Bar and the work out centers. Good Luck Boys!!
Adventures Of The Highwayman!!
I just got the following email from RT:
"I am heading west to Puget Sound (Seattle) and am now stranded at Kimball, NE due to I-80 closed.  Great blizzard going on now.......  I am safely stopped at a Wal-mart parking lot.  Will spend the night here and then make up for lost time tomorrow.  My BIG RIG is rocking back and forth due to the winds and making me sea sick!!!!!!!!!
take care."  RT
Ron Sends A Good Story!!
I got the following from Cousin Ron:
"I had a treat last night - I went with my grand sons on a cub scout outing to a private museum to look at "some big game."  I figured that I would see a bear, some deer heads, a coyote and some pheasants - boy was I wrong.  We went to the home of 80 yr old, Bob Van Horn just east of Glidden.  He not only had 400-500 stuffed animals that he and his wife and son had shot, but he had a 22 ft tall, full-bodied giraffe and a full sized African elephant.  There were 20 full-sized bears and half a dozen bear rugs.  Notice the polar bear right above my head in the pic.  He had a deer, gazelle, sheep or goat from every part of the world.  This was a special treat for me since I had met Bob in the early 70s and handled some of his insurance needs thru the company I represented at that time.  He spoke kindly about the Tryons of Glidden and wanted to know where every one was.        What a treat on a Monday night."

President Obama Enters The Tryon NCAA Contest!!
Well, kind of. He will not win any money, but you can see how well your picks did compared to his. They are his picks and he went mostly with the favorites. Did his teleprompter pick them for him? Seems they are pretty Conservative picks for such a Liberal.  We shattered our previous record and have 41 Saps entered. The most exciting contest of the year is now up and running. It is fun and it only costs a CHEAP $5.00. The top SEVEN  entries will win and the last place picker gets their entry back. Good Luck,  Weeks of entertainment for a really cheap price. Last year's result was 1st place Brett, with 2nd Gwen, 3rd Nancy H, 4th Larry,  5th Randy, 6th Zach and 7th Alex S....We had 37 entries!! So like where is Iowa? (10th place in Big Ten) and Iowa State? (10th place Big 12) and no Drake? Click Here For The Latest Standings.

Jim Platt Passes Away.....
I got the following from Sandra Tryon:
"Wanted to let you know so you can pass the word that Jim Platt passed away this morning. (Wednesday) Dave called and said he passed at 5:20a.m.  It was very quick.  Said that the viewing is looking like Friday night and the funeral at 10:30 a.m., I'm assuming at the Lutheran church in Glidden. He had been going downhill for awhile at home with what appeared to be liver cancer. We helped him celebrate his 80th birthday with an open house in their home over the holidays.  He was truly a dear man and a good friend of my folks, grandparents and the rest of the Tryon clan." Tough News, we all have fond memories of Jim. The Tryons send their prayers and sympathies.

The Obama Recession..(Blue Line)
*The Stock Market was OVER 14,000 when the Democratic Party took over Congress in 2007!!
*The AVERAGE recession lasts 16-18 months.
*We have had 13 recessions since World War Two.
*George W. Bush inherited a recession from Clinton. He CUTS taxes. Economy Grows 7 straight years.
*Ronald Regan inherited a recession from Carter. He CUTS taxes, Economy grows for 30 years.
*Franklin Roosevelt inherited a recession. He RAISES taxes, the Great Depression lasts until WWII.
*Barack Obama inherits a recession. He RAISES taxes. (Cap and Trade) Now, if you think the extra $13 a week is a tax cut (cutting your tax rate), it is NOT. They are just changing the withholding tables! You WILL pay taxes on this money as always AND, if you pay no income tax, (almost 50% of Americans) those people are given Welfare checks that YOU will pay for. Change You Can Believe In!! (Oh, the $13 is just for 6 months, then it is $8 for a year, then ZIPPO). The OLD SHELL Game at work.

Congratulations Travis And Lorrie!!
Great News!! Travis has announced that he and Lorrie Corbett are now officially engaged. No date has been set that I know of. Lorrie will graduate from NWMS this summer and will student teach in the Carroll area,  Lorrie majored in Elementary Education and hopes to join the long list of Tryon Teachers! Lorrie is from Omaha, Nebraska. Great News and the very Best Wishes For The Young Couple!! Welcome to the Tryon Family, Lorrie!

Jack Gets His License!!
Jack got a probationary license (6 month) and is allowed to drive in a radius of 10 miles. I think he has already taken off for Carroll. Good Luck Jack, and congrats!!
Sap Of The Month?
Travis has been nominated!! Seems, Travis, who works for a bank in Carroll, was asked by the BIG BOSS to take some documents to the Post Office. The President of the bank told Travis to be back in 10 minutes, sharp. Well, our boy Travis, wanted to impress the Big Cheese, so he hustled as fast as he could, down to the Post Office, ran inside and delivered the mail. He then hustled back to his car trying to get back to the bank in LESS time so the boss would be pleased. Travis was SHOCKED to discover that he had locked his keys in his car......WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING!....Geeze, What A Sap!!. He called the police to help him, they showed up, but they did not have the equipment, so they had to get a locksmith. This took HOURS!! When Travis finally returned back to the bank, the Big Boss looked at the clock and said, "NO EXCUSES, I said 10 minutes!! You are on probation!!" Poor Travey, he just hustled too much. Now, the source for this story is somewhat dubious and not a regular snitch, so I am not so sure about the probation thing, but I am sure you will agree that Travis DOES deserve some consideration for February's Sap Of The Month!!

WE GOT YOUR MONEY. . .
GONNA SPEND YOUR MONEY. . .

GONNA PRINT SOME MORE MONEY . . .

Tryon Bulletin Board Is Back Up And Running!
Just in time for the latest stork sighting, the infamous Tryon Bulletin Board appears to be working again. Click Here To Post Or View.

Sap Of The Month!!
Donnie, the world's oldest shortstop, has been nominated for the prestigious Tryon Sap Of The Month Award, for January. Seems his car's transmission is going out and it no longer can run in reverse. Well, we have all had troubles like that, BUT it seems THREE times last month Donnie had to hire a tow truck to back his car out of where he parked it. When he parks his car, he forgets that he has no reverse!! Now, I can see that happening once or maybe even twice, but it takes a real SAP to do it three times. Congrats, Donnie and don't forget to nominate others. If we get enough, we will vote on a Sap Of The Year and announce it at Christmas.
Big Birthday Bash For Lucille!!

More Technical Problems!!!
This website has been out of service for over a week, I apologize. The hosting server has had issues. When I upload, it stalls out. I hope it is back to normal, but I have my doubts. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Steve And Beau.....
Randy, Sandy and Jack spent 4 hours visiting Steve and his dog Beau. Steve has spent the last year or so training Beau to help the disabled. Steve did such a great job that upon passing a series of tests, Beau could be worth up to $35,000. Randy, also a dog trainer, was VERY impressed with Beau's intelligence and training. Beau is a chocolate lab. Randy said he whipped Steve in checkers, but Steve beat Randy in six moves in chess. I wonder if Beau could have beaten both of them? Steve has also been chosen to design and paint a logo on the gymnasium floor. Randy is currently trucking through Cincinnati and all points East, until Feb. 1st. A great time was had by all.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!
Today, CL would be 100 years old!! In 1989, the family, led by the Watsons, put together a special birthday video. It's a fact that the folks loved watching this video over and over because they were so proud of their kids, grand kids and the entire family. Now the video itself is 20 years old and you have heard how the quality of tapes fade with age, so here it is digitized as well as possible. CLICK HERE TO ENJOY (high speed internet) some classic memories. Happy Birthday Dad, we sure miss you......... If you are having trouble viewing the video, I made a smaller size one.  CLICK HERE TO ENJOY . Be patient while it loads.

Tricky Dick's Bowl Bonanza was a big success, especially for Randy as he won not only First Place, but also Fourth Place as L. Welk! Congrats to RT, he knows football! Tyra finished second with Tim third in a very close finish. Tyra actually tied for first, but RT had the best tie breaker. Tanner finished 5th. Thanks to all for playing, now study up on the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Click Here For Final Results.
Major, Major Technical Problems!
The Tryon Home Page has been experiencing the worst technical problems in our almost 12 year history. I have not been able to update for almost two weeks. The upload would just stall out. Many people have been working on it and we even moved the entire site to another server. Sorry for the inconvenience. Some things may still not be working, like the bulletin board, but at least I can update this page......dbt

From The Highwayman....
I just received the following email and pictures from RT: "I am currently on a 7 day bus trip taking 56 ISU students to the Washington DC area on a Church campus crusade.  These students are here meeting 800 other students across the nation in a bridges religious program.  My group is mainly Chinese, but also have some from Korea, Netherlands, India, and Ukraine.  Today the Highwayman was asked to take them site seeing at the DC famous sites.  I have not been here before and it was really neat seeing the Pentagon, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, White House, and the U.S. Capitol.  I stopped the bus many times for quick pictures and did have an armed policeman stop my bus and tell me I was in an unauthorized area (too near the White House)  After I showed this cop my Obama picture all was well and he then treated us like ROYALTY.  I am with this group until Jan. 2nd and having lots of fun eating all types of Asian food. As of Jan. 1st Windstar promoted me to a full time driver-  2/3 truck & 1/3 bus.  Windstar has 80 bus drivers and only 3 full time and I am honored to be one of them. Take care to all and Happy 2009." The Highwayman

Todd Wins Tryon Super Bowl!!
Todd's Sioux Falls Storm won the 2008 Tryon Football league by thrashing WW's Mad Mice 169-73. It is the 1st Football League Championship for Todd.. Led by Aaron Rodgers, Willie Parker, Brian Westbrook, Andre Johnson and the unbelievable Eagle Defense, Todd (No.2 seed) cruised to the victory. Doug won the loser's bracket by defeating Brad, 76-69. What a great season. Todd won in a league of 16 football experts, so it is quite an accomplishment. The defending champion, East Glidden Grunts (DBT) finished third.
Congratulations To Christy And Tyler!!
They announced at Christmas time that they are expecting another bundle of joy. Not sure when, but it will be child No. 3 and another grand child for Jerry and Jerilyn!  Great News and Congrats!!

Merry Christmas!!
The Spirit Of Christmas Past woke me up last night. What a dream! It was A Tryon Christmas in Glidden, exactly 20 years ago. You could hear the sounds of family, feel the joy of fellowship, and touch the Spirit that binds us all together. It was great to remember the way it was. Why, you could even see Mom kissing Santa Claus! A lot has changed in 20 years, good and bad, but it was just wonderful to hear the voices and laughter again.
