Saturday, December 4th Is The Tryon Christmas!! Last Sunday at the picnic we decided on a date for the Tryon Christmas. Maxine then contacted the Methodist Church in Glidden and it was confirmed that Saturday, December 4th will be our celebration. Please make plans to attend. More details to follow. Maxine also reserved the new Glidden shelter house by the swimming pool for our July 4th celebration. So put that on your calendars, too. Thanks, Max!! |

Great Time At Glidden!!The weather was beautiful and it was a great day last Sunday in Glidden. It is so much fun to go back there. A big thanks to Randy for setting this up and a big thanks to JJ for all of the grilling that he did. I would say there was plenty of food and great conversation. The Iowa fans were not too arrogant, except for maybe the cake that read Iowa 35 and Dale 7. Randy wore a cowboy shirt from Brokeback Mountain? or did I see it on a Slim Whitman album cover? Dick showed off his high tech cell phone. (Warren appeared jealous) Tyra spent her time texting boyfriends, Jerry kept checking the NFL scores (hmmm, I wonder why?) , Tanner kept cruising the town on his motorcycle, looking for chicks and the rest of us had a great time with the food and the weather. Click Here For A Slide Show and I apologize there are so many pictures of Grandpa's girls, he kind of gets carried away and most of the pictures were not so good because of the bright sunlight. |

Tryon Homecoming Is Sunday, September 12th!! To celebrate the end of summer and the kickoff of the football season, RANDY (who is making a quick trip back from North Dakota) is hosting a Tryon Homecoming Bash, Sunday at 12:30 p.m. What better place than the Glidden park to have the Tryons get together?!! Randy has reserved the shelter house and will supply some meat/appetizers. He is bringing buffalo and walleye from North Dakota (OK, you may want to bring your own burgers and hot dogs to grill.). Glidden has a beautiful park and a GREAT place for kids to play softball, kickball, baseball, basketball or football, so bring some stuff for your kids or grand kids. This will be a post-Iowa-ISU party so no gloating or pouting. This is a picnic, so you need to bring a cold dish and/or hot dish etc. Maybe utensils and lawn chairs would be a good idea, too. We NEED to get together as much as possible so try to make a big effort to come join us. It is always so fun to watch the kids growing up. The weather was not so cooperative July 4th, so hope to see you and your family Sunday, September 12th!

Birthdays And Bumper Cars.....This month we celebrated 3 birthdays and went to Adventureland in Des Moines to top off the month..... Alexis turned 7, Cassidi 5 and Johnny got older too. We went to Adventureland on the park's last regular day (a Monday) and there were NO LINES. In fact, on the bumper cars they just said if you want to ride again, go ahead. Needless to say, we all had a great time with lots of laughs and excitement. A special thanks to Jodie who found some tickets for us. We all had a blast on a beautiful August day. The girls are excited to go back again. Alexis rode the Tornado and drove her own bumper car. Cassi almost got sick on that pirate boat that swings really high. Gwen rode the most rides and Grandpa and Johnny ate the most and we all got wet, numerous times. CLICK HERE FOR A SHORT SLIDE SHOW and try to count the smiles. This is pure Americana. |

Poor
Jerilyn........Jerilyn was babysitting at Tyler's house this week, when suddenly, she heard tapping at the patio door. It was pretty late and she was quite nervous when she saw a deputy sheriff in front of the glass, standing with his flashlight and drug dog. He asked if the owner of the house was home. Obviously, Tyler and Kristi were not. The policeman informed Jerilyn that there was a VERY LARGE patch of marijuana growing in the back yard and was she aware of it? "Eh, no." Jerilyn responded as she hid her wine cooler behind her back. They walked to the back yard and there certainly was a VERY LARGE patch of hemp, mixed right in with the other weeds. Tyler (pictured) had purchased the house last winter. Seems the former tenant forgot to move everything. The deputy sheriff had an 8 foot high wooden fence between himself and Tyler and he was in his backyard entertaining when someone noticed the "weeds" extending above the fence. I would not call this crack police work. Seems Tyler is not what you would call a landscaper, either. Anyway, there is a big discussion on how to destroy it. Jerilyn seems to be calming down and now Tyler and Kristi have to withstand all of the teasing. Tyler could be nominated for Sap Of The Month, but his brothers, Todd and Lynn have already won it, so mellow out.......Hmmmm, Tyler has been driving a pretty nice car, recently......Nah, nobody is dumb enough to grow pot next to a deputy sheriff......unless the former owner was. Oh, and I have been informed that the picture is of the former owner, not Tyler. |

Rocky
Mountain High!!
"Jan, Eric, Shonna and boys just spent a great week in Colorado
Springs right after the Fourth of July. We saw lots of
sites....Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo,
Olympic Training Center, Air Force Academy, Manitou Springs
Cliff Dwellings, Seven Falls, ate a Chuck wagon dinner and
enjoyed a cowboy show at Flying W Ranch and even got to take the
boys to their first ever major league baseball game to see the
Rockies sweep the Cardinals! All went well...the one 'glitch'
of the trip....when we arrived at the Pikes Peak Summit it was
28 degrees, snowing, and DENSE fog! So much for the view from
the top!!!! But we can't complain...there was so much BEAUTIFUL
scenery we enjoyed all week. And Maxine....we even saw an A&W
in Manitou Springs!!!!!! Sounds like lots of Tryons have had
many great memories in this area! Have a great rest of the
summer! " , Shonna. Sounds like a great vacation. I remember
Ray's family and C.L.'s youngest having a chuck wagon dinner,
too. I think ours was at or near the Garden of the Gods. Wow, do
those pictures bring back lots of great memories!!

Dana College Is Closing Down!! DBT and Randy spent a couple of years there and many Glidden kids have gone there, but not any more. The private Lutheran college is closing it's doors due to financial problems. Hate to hear this as it was a very nice place with special people. This makes the SECOND college that RT attended that has closed. (Are you old enough to remember Westmar?) Is BV next? Click Here For Story. |

Bay was upset last week, so Sioux Falls now plays the Chicago Slaughter,
owned by former Bear QB Jim McMahon! (pictured) The Storm are now the
number one seed in their division. Go Storm!!Welcome To Tryonville!! Have you been to Sioux Falls, lately? There are Tryon signs EVERYWHERE!! RT, JJ, Jerilyn and myself went to the Sioux Falls Storm playoff game Saturday and I saw Tryon Gym signs and logos everywhere I looked. On the field, on T-shirts, on the uniforms, on the sidelines, they dominate the advertising. What a great time we all had. There were tornado warnings in the area. During the National Anthem, when the singer got to "and bombs bursting in air", there was a HUGE clap of thunder and all of the lights in the arena went out. The people kept singing. The lights came on shortly. Todd, the owner of the Storm, must have planned it that way as The Storm were running onto the field.. We had the best seats in the house and we all had such a great time as the Storm scored right before the half to make it 7-6 against their arch rivals, the Omaha Beef. The final score was 42-23 in favor of the Storm, who now advance to the next round against Green Bay at Sioux Falls.. Gooooooo Storm!! A big Thanks to Todd for showing us such a memorable time. (photo by Randy) Notice the Tryon Gym sign in the background as Todd discusses the pre-game strategy. |

The Oil Man Returns!! RT is getting back from his training in Texas on Friday and he has quite the tales to tell. Three weeks working in 105 degrees, killing a water moccasin, dodging spiders and working with oil has him bursting with interesting stories. It was not all work, though. He got a tour of Texas Stadium, watched the Dallas Cowboys practice, saw the birthplace of Dan Blocker (Hoss of Bonanza fame), saw George Foreman's home, the Jim Reeves Memorial, saw real wild hogs and toured the Fort Worth Stockyards. The highlight of his site seeing was going to Billy Bob's. Randy took his family there 25 years ago and Tanya Tucker was performing, so he goes back and guess who was up on stage singing? Tanya Tucker, believe it or not. The Highwayman is back for the weekend, then heads to North Dakota. He sent the following pictures.

(remember, last year's celebration was rained out) They REALLY need to know how many plan on being there, so please email Donna if you are coming!! Click Here. This has been such a wonderful tradition thru the years, with so many memories. It is such fun to watch the kids grow. All are welcome, just let Donna/Bruce know. Please bring a hot and cold dish, your table service and maybe lawn chairs. Lemonade will be provided. The picnic starts at noon. Keep your eye on the weather. Hope to see you there!! (Beth says she may not be able to play spoons this year?!) |
Movie
Review.....Robin HoodAbout a week ago RT and DBT went to the movies. The first time since they went together to see Young Frankenstein in 1974. DBT was so impressed with Blazing Saddles that year (he even took the folks to it) that he and RT drove to Des Moines to Young Frankenstein's Premiere. One of the greatest movies ever made, by the way. (Click Here For The Trailer) This time it was Robin Hood, with Russell Crowe. Pretty average movie we thought. (Man, how many Robin Hood movies has Hollywood made?) This was Memorial Day evening and I was stunned how poor the crowd was. Movies must be in big trouble. The story was quite different than the others and I thought Maid Marion was poor. My big take on the Robin Hood legend is: The original Robin Hood was an anti-tax guy. Prince John taxes the heck out of the common folk and they rebel. In the 1930's, Hollywood came up with the rob from the rich and give to the poor angle, which is right out of Karl Marx's philosophy. The left does not like the anti-tax spin, so they changed it to anti-rich. This movie WAS anti-tax, but at the very end, Maid Marion says how wonderful life is in Sherwood Forrest, there are no rich and no poor......Geeze, Comrade Marion....where is the incentive to work, produce and create jobs? Who wants to live in a commune? Ever hear of the Rev. Jim Jones?....Sorry, I get wound up with idiots who believe the big fairness lie.....Anyway, I would wait for the DVD. So I wonder what movie RT and I will see the next time.....in 36 years?.....Rocky 25? |

Way to go Brandon, I am sure Grandpa Bill will be smiling!!! |
![]() Dale
And Janet Are Back.......They had a nice and pleasant trip back from the Tennessee area. They had a great time at Jim and Nancy's. (I can speak from experience what great hosts they are!) Lots of sites and adventures for Dale and Janet. You can see more pictures at www.daletryon.com Dale got to meet Abraham Lincoln, went to a Cardinal game, they saw a man arrested (he was cooking their breakfast) and Dale backed into a pole. (Janet's fault?) There is no truth to the rumor that Dale was buying a race horse and trying to duplicate what those investors in Iowa did, by racing a horse in the Kentucky Derby. They did get lost a couple of times when Dale refused to listen to his GPS and insisted he was right..... Imagine that.......Welcome Home. |
Josh
And Mandy Have Settled In......Their big move from Oklahoma to Warrensburg, Missouri is now completed. Josh has been hired as an assistant coach for the University of Central Missouri. He coaches the receivers and is their recruiting coordinator. Warrensburg is SE of Kansas City. The Mules are in the same conference as Northwest Missouri State, so his former team mates and coaches have been giving him a hard time that he is now a Mule. The two universities are big rivals. Iowa State has announced that they are hiring Fred Hoiberg as their new Men's Basketball coach. So who is wearing their Fred Hoiberg jersey to work today? (Fred is a former ISU basketball star) Hint: At the half time of an ISU vs Iowa exhibition game in Carroll, Freddy was introduced with this person and he gave him/her a BIG KISS!! The year was 1995. The Answer to the quiz is.......Julie (I know, Brett seemed pretty logical) Jerry and Big John rigged it so Julie could meet Hoiberg at a halftime presentation, so out on the court, in front of the crowd, he smacks her.....Wow......thanks to all for voting. |

Over Troubled Waters....What a great renter. Terry Goetz, who has been a long time renter of C.L's Crawford County farm has taken his bulldozer and made a land bridge across the creek that splits the farm. I can remember at least two bridges that were wiped out by floods. This is great news to all of you hunters, who can now walk both sides. WW was having his militia maneuvers and noticed the bridge. He took the pictures after testing out his new armament. Plastic buckets BEWARE...... |

Well, for 9 hours anyway. Seems he was hauling a big load back from Washington, when somewhere in Idaho he started to have troubles with his clutch. In true Tryon stubbornness, he tries to make it back to Des Moines. He even had to talk his way out of trouble at a Wyoming weigh station, when they asked him to back up and he couldn't. Our hero made it to Council Bluffs, where it took 9 hours to fix the problem, then he was back on the road. Picture is of the load. |

Travis Is 0-3..... Travis tried to play 3 April Fool jokes on Lorrie. #1 was the old cellophane on the toilet trick. It took Travis about an hour to get it just right, but Lorrie saw it immediately. #2 was the old tie the kitchen sprayer down trick. That one did not work either. Then he tried #3, the tie a string to a paper plate in the closet trick, but that too was a dud. So who was the April Fool? Any surprise that this is RT's son? |

Of The Road.......A couple of weeks ago, on a Saturday, I actually left my easy chair and drove to Lamoni, Iowa to watch Rick Weaver coach his last game. I thought it was very appropriate as I was there for his FIRST game in 1973 at Jefferson High School. Rick has been the head basketball coach at Baker University for the past 25 years and he previously coached at Jefferson HS (with Jerry and I), Westmar, Wayne State and then Baker. He has always been a great friend to me and to our family. The Thursday before his last game, Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas held a Rick Weaver Night for his last home game. The gym was packed, t-shirts were handed out and many, many friends and players were there to show their appreciation for his years of service to not only the school, but also the community. Before his last game, I had the opportunity to visit at great length with Rick. He is doing well, except he is having both knees replaced this month. He wished us all the best and hopes to get up to Iowa for some relaxation and golf this summer Rick and I shared a house back in our Jefferson days and we both have quite the stories to tell. Mine are true, but he has been known to fudge around the edges. I listened on the internet to the pre-game, game and post game of Rick's big night and I thought it was Mother Teresa being honored. Now, I remember him getting into it with AAU basketball opponents (pushing, then running away), spilling stuff all over rich KC Royals fans (numerous times) and always having me sneak in or out of our house when he was "entertaining" a lady friend or two. Mother Teresa? That can't be the Rick Weaver I know. Rick may be the worse card player ever and he may be full of crapola most of the time and I constantly had to carry him on the tennis court or show him how to play "hustle golf", but he sure has those people in Kansas fooled!! (hustle golf is when you run from shot to shot to rattle your league opponents) I know all of the Tryons wish Rick and his family a long and prosperous future. If you look REAL close at the first picture after clicking it, notice the scout in the background, at least that is what Graceland thought. Now who would scout the last game of the season? Photo found on Graceland site by WW. Second picture is Rick's last home game. As you can tell, he never was a snappy dresser. Is that a Johnny Carson sport coat? Once, his mother came up to me and asked if I could help Rick pick out some clothes that would actually fit. Maybe something a little more in style with the times. (Rick loved pastels, it was hard for him to give up those pink shirts) The third picture shows those cheap t-shirts that were bought for the occasion. Not a high quality Graphic Edge product. Hey,I would use my coat to cover it up too. I will bet those t-shirts get a lot of wear after the big night. A real collector's item. Notice the 1970's picture of Rick on the front. Still living in the disco days. Fourth picture is a classic. Did he just see the movie "Walk The Line"? The man in black, see I told you he was "clothing dysfunctional" and they still do not fit. Geeze, keep the jacket on! Here are a couple of stories of Rick's final games and the legend continues..... Click For Story 1, Click For Story 2 Click For Story 3 (the laundry man) |

But wait, a devoted UNI Panther fan MISSED THE GAME!!.....Yes, Tim was seen eating out at Living History Farms on Saturday and missed the greatest game EVER in UNI history!!! Shonna, Sherry and Todd P all cheered for the purple and the gold, but not Tim. It was DATE NIGHT.....heh heh, heh.........My how things have changed. Now ,back in 1990, Sherry, Tim and Todd were sitting in a Northern Iowa dorm room as a guy named Newbie nailed a last second shot to defeat Missouri in the NCAA'S, but I guess as we get older, we forget about school loyalty. Zach, Nicole and Natalie were cheering on the Panthers, so maybe that counts for something. Congrats to the UNI Panthers and all of their fans!! Man, does this open up the NCAA Contest, wow!! UPDATE #1......Tim FORGOT to set his VCR to tape the game, anyone have a copy for our Sap Of The Month? UPDATE #2....as posted on the Tryon Bulletin Board: "...biggest UNI fan seen running the streets of LaPorte City with UNI flag!! (His favorite Christmas present!) 50 Years Ago......... Dale, our Glidden Graphic scout discovered the following gem in the Graphic. "In the latest Glidden Graphic in the 50 years ago section, 3 Tryons were mentioned: (1) Tommie Tryon placed second in the Pinewood Derby scout races; (2) Dick Tryon was among 10 youngsters that were awarded badges and awards from the Boy Scouts and (3) Larry Tryon, represented the youth, as a featured speaker, at the Methodist Father and Son banquet." Boy, do I remember those Father-Son Banquets in the basement of the Methodist Church. DBT was ALWAYS being farmed out to some guy who had no son that night. Joe Bundt, Harold Bender, Albie Davis, Ralph Bish are a few that I remember. Randy was NEVER farmed out as he was TOO ORNERY and C.L. had to corral him. The food must have been pretty darn good as they always had a very nice turnout. I know they also had Mother-Daughter banquets and I remember how proud Mom was of her little girls. It would be a real shame if this type of social event does not happen any more in Glidden. A Tryon Salute to the generation that took a lot of pride in family and church. Thanks Mom and Dad!! |

Giants Of The Trucking Industry Meet In Colorado!!Kind of like the Union Pacific Railroad and the Central Pacific meeting at Promontory Point or an Eisenhower-Khrushchev summit meeting. The HIghwayman and Cousin Jim met near Denver and spent the afternoon together telling tall tales of life on the road. Basketball games, gossip, lunch and a few cold ones were also the order of the day. I am sure they both shared some bizarre and possibly truthful stories of trucking the Great American Highway. (Is Candy cane there? or Large Marj? from Pee Wee's Great Adventure, an RT favorite although he had trouble following the intricate plot) Jimmy said it was great seeing family members without going to a funeral. Fortunately Randy caught Jim in a rare slow time of his busy social calendar so Jim was able to host the historical meeting of the minds. Sounds like they both had a great time and Jimmy was quite the host.. Photo by Jim. |

Brother Is In Haiti And YOU Can Help!!I got the following from Wendy (Todd's): "www.leesdreamforhaiti.com It's a site for helping my brother (Lee, pictured) who lives in Haiti and has survived the earthquake but has lost his home in the disaster and is enduring many of the hardships. We've set up this site to help get him and his community first-hand assistance. Their main need right now is for food and clean drinking water, which is difficult to find because the markets in Jacmel and Port-au-Prince are destroyed and due to people fleeing Port-au-Prince and arriving in his community of Mizak, their supplies are running low. Donating to Red Cross and World Food Program also is the quickest way to get necessary foods and bottled water to the people. The entire story is on that site and we've also put it up Lee's story on www.tryongym.com so feel free to pull any information you'd like from that. I appreciate any support given to my brother, whether financial, prayer support, or just passing the word on to others who are looking to make a difference......Thanks," Wendy Please check these sites out and pray for all of those trying to make a difference in Haiti and please donate if you can. |

In stunning move, Cauthen is ousted as city manager
By LYNN HORSLEY and MICHAEL MANSUR
Two years ago, Mayor Mark Funkhouser of Kansas City tried to
remove Wayne Cauthen as city manager.
On Thursday, he finally succeeded in a move that passed the City Council by just one vote and that took City Hall completely by surprise. Cauthen, who was manager for more than six years, was escorted from the building by the security chief. |

Ron Is Named To Hall Of Fame!!Ron's football officiating career hit a high point when he received the super news and he also shares the following stories:: "I received a letter from Rick Wulkow recently. I was humbled and honored as I read that I would be inducted into the Hall of Fame during the half-time ceremonies of the Boys 2A Basketball Tourney in Des Moines on March 12. I began writing a history of my officiating. I worked over 520 games for over 156 high school districts spanning a time from 1967 to 2009. One game in 1980 was between Coon Rapids at Bayard and it rained so much we had to re chalk the goal lines before we could play the game. We toweled off in the home-ec room and used the sinks (no showers) and the football coach made us hotdogs and chilli; for that we were paid $27.50 apiece. In 1990 it rained 4 inches on a Thursday followed by 7 inches of snow Friday night and early Saturday. Augustana College was more interested in getting the game played than tearing up the field. When we arrived, the field was covered with snow. They buried a tractor trying to blade the snow off the field. In a brilliant move by a grounds-keeper, they decided to use orange spray cans and sprayed the lines on top of the snow every 10 yards. The game was played, the statistic-keepers went crazy, the field was torn up beyond recognition and lots of our clothing was destroyed in the Mud Bowl of 1990. Official "T" Congrats Ron On The Well Deserved News!! |
| Unbelievable!! Missed Extra Point by Alabama Determines Winner of Bowl Bonanza!! In the closest contest ever, that meaningless Extra Point kick with 33 seconds left in the game was the difference in the 2009 Bowl Bonanza. If Alabama makes it, Bryce Wins.....Wow, it hits the upright and lucky Dick and Alexis tie for first place. Bryce and Tytan tie for third and Eric finishes in 5th as he picked the exact points scored. So DICK KNOWS FOOTBALL.....and who finished dead last? Why it is Lucky Dale. (Mr. ISU) Big Cy did win the Fantasy Football College Contest, though. (DBT was second) Wow, it was a great contest. Now start studying for the NCAAs.... Click Here For Standings. |
