Cougars Win The Tryon Super Bowl!!
Larry's Nishnabotna Cougars won the 2006 Tryon Football Fantasy League Championship with a hard fought 106-82 victory over Bob K's Kaufy Creamers. This was the Cougars, and LT's, first championship banner! The Cougars were led by an outstanding performance by the red hot Stephen Jackson of the St. Louis Rams. The Cougars also won the championship with J.P Losman at QB, Wow!! Jim T's Denver Buffs won the consolation game and Eric's River Dogs won the loser's bracket. Well, wait til next year, as the beloved East Glidden Grunts fire their coach and general manager. (the Grunts just are not the same after Jerome Bettis retired)

Boise State Rules!!
Ok, I think I have seen quite a few football games in my lifetime. I saw the Flute throw that beat Miami, the Drew Tate last play of the game to beat LSU and the snowy playoff game that Ed Podolak starred in for Kansas City,  but what a thriller last night as Boise State magically knocked off the Big 12 Champion, Oklahoma Sooners 43-42!! I still cannot believe that they even went for a two pointer at the end, let alone the play they ran. I realize many did not stay up and watch it, but Man, was it worth it, it was better than a Rocky/Invincible/Rudy movie. Go Broncos!! Now, why on earth is there NOT a football playoff like all of the other NCAA sports and all of the other NCAA football divisions? Did you know the BCS had to "adjust" the points system just to allow Boise State to play in a big time bowl? Let the Bowl winners play!!!!

Loess Hills Retreat!!
The Watsons hosted an overnighter at the Iowa Loess Hills, near Pisgah, last week. They spent two nights in a cabin retreat with a beautiful view of the historic Loess Hills. Click Here For Slide Show. Pictures by Doug and Warren. The picture to the left is Eating out at the Old Home Keep On Truck'in Cafe in Pisgah, Iowa. Deb, Terry, Nancy, WW, Melody, Jodie and Doug remembering that commercial from the 1970s. Needless to say, a great time was had by all.

Ok, I teach U.S. History and one thing I like to do at the end of the year is to show a slide show of the famous people that have passed away throughout the last year in my classes. Some of these people are famous, others are infamous. Saints and sinners alike, it gives me an opportunity to discuss and reflect on the impact some of these people had on society and on history. How many do you remember? How many can you identify? Some of these people I have followed for years, like Jeane Kirkpatrick (UN ambassador, never ever mentioned because she was a Conservative), Milton Friedman (Nobel winning economist, I read two of his books), Don Knotts (Randy's favorite), Wilson Pickett, etc. Click Here To Enjoy The Slide Show and can you answer the tough Tryon Quiz O Rama question? Which of these people did DBT meet and have a very nice conversation with? Answer is at the bottom of the page, but watch the video first, then guess......
Twin Grandkids!!
Luella's (Bartelson) twin grand daughters, Bridgette and Kirsten (plug in mouth) are enjoying a playful day at home while mother Karen is at work. Luella was babysitting..  Photos sent by Jim T.

Happy 50th, Dale and Janet!!
A couple of days ago, Dale and Janet celebrated their "real" 50th anniversary. (8/26)
Click Here to view the slide show of their dinner party in Des Moines.
Click Here to view the great time they had with their kids and grandkids at the State Fair and Adventureland.
Congrats to Dale and Janet from all of the Tryons!
(Thanks for all of the memories)

Off To School!!
Some people are pretty excited, just ask Cole, son of Julie and Brad. Julie had this to say, "Cole LOVES kindergarten!  He came home the first night and gave me a big hug, saying, "MOM, I LOVE learning!"  and the second day he was up, dressed and sitting on the couch with his backpack, ready to go at 5:30 in the morning!  We'll see how this week goes with 5 full days instead of 2 1/2 days for him.  Camden isn't having such a great time.  He really misses his brother and cries all day." Wow, I am sure some of us old time teachers are just as excited as Cole. EHK has been going for two weeks and Nevada starts this Wednesday with kids.

Santa Brings A Pony For Christmas!!
Yes, a real live, eating and pooping pony for Alexis the cowgirl. Now Grandpa had nothing to do with this, but Alexis received a real live pony for Christmas.. It was a fun Christmas here in Nevada as Gwen, Johnny and the girls enjoyed a great Christmas Day together with Grandpa. Alexis got a barn set with lots of corrals, a stuffed Maggie the cow as well as many other gifts. The big highlight was Cassid's jack-in-the-box that played Home On The Range, then a horse head would pop up and whinny. We all had fun playing with that. Nothing, however could top a real live pony, named JJ. Click Here to watch the video, it may take a little while to load.   When she first sees the pony, she grabs a brush and starts to groom the pony. JJ joins the young bulls out at Barb's sister's farm, north of Nevada. Hey, what's another critter to feed?

2006 Tryon Super Bowl!!
Nishnabotna Cougars VS Kaufy's Creamers!!

16 Rugged Individuals started the 2006 Tryon Football League season with high hopes and these are the two LUCKY finalists. Larry's Nishnabotna Cougars will host Bob Kaufman's (Brad's Dad) Kaufy Creamers for the VERY prestigious TFL Championship. The Creamers are led by the Peyton Manning to Marvin Harrison connection while the Cougars (no QB) have the power running of Frank Gore and Stephen Jackson and the brilliant coaching of Larry, according to Larry. Dale was last year's winner and this season provided wild outcomes as always. Good Luck to both. We will know next week who the Champion is. (Eric's River Dogs play Tim's Timanators in the loser's bracket and Jim T's Denver Buffs play Brad's Blindsiders for the Consolation game) Click Here To View Brackets.

A Wonderful Tryon Christmas....
Last Sunday, quite a few of the Tryons got together to celebrate Christmas and our families. We all had a wonderful time. Great moments, great food and a special Spirit was enjoyed by everyone that could make it. We all missed the members that could not attend, they were in our thoughts, hearts and prayers. A few of the highlights were seeing June and Peg. What a wonderful surprise and thanks to Maxine for calling them. They actually let June win the card game, the spirit of giving you know. There was an impromptu music concert in the sanctuary that was just beautiful by a few of the great grand kids. There was also a surprise puppet show by an old elementary teacher. Santa was in great form (red nose?) and the kids really enjoyed him. Santa had to cut things a little short when the two twins (Nancy and Donna) leaped into his lap. Something popped! Not sure if Ol' St. Nick is going to be the same. The church continues to be a nice place to have this and thanks to the congregation for letting us. It was precious moments and memories for the little ones as well as the big ones and I for one am looking forward to next year. Bless Be The Tie That Binds and Merry Christmas From The Tryons. Click Here For Slide Show. Photos by Dick, Dale and two by Bruce. (Special thanks to Nancy for doing what she did to make this year's Christmas so special.)

Great News From Florida!!
I just received the following email from Cousin Jim:
Great News from the Florida Clan! Auntie Helen is coming home from the re-hab center on Monday, December 11. She will be moving into Jim and Nancy's condo. Please direct all calls, emails, and cards to her at Jim's address. Aunt Helen will require Home health care services but has made a big but not complete recovery in her mental and physical condition. Jim and Nancy took most of Aunt Helen's furniture and clothing to their summer Tennessee home last weekend and moved her bed into Jim's condo office. It will be a little cramped until spring, when they plan to move to Tennessee for the summer and fall. They will all then return to Florida for the winter. We thank you all for your prayers, letters and calls......Jim H.

Tryon Christmas Is Sunday December 17th!!
At the Glidden Methodist Church, meal to be served at 1:00 p.m. If you wish your kids to receive gifts, you must bring your own. No names are being drawn. Santa will be there to pass them out. No one has informed me yet on what to bring for food, so watch this web site carefully. Hope as many as possible can make it!! It is important for the family to share these precious moments together.

Sap Of The Month?
Julie and family went to the ISU basketball game last weekend and noticed there were NO cars in the parking lot. Hmmmmm, they looked at the tickets and discovered the game started at 6:00 pm, not 1:00 pm....Talk about eager ISU fans, but WAIT......the week before they drove from Waukee to the ISU basketball game and THEN discovered they had left their tickets back home and had to drive back and get them. Now, you know all of this was Brad's fault............seems the boys really love to go to the games or is it just the car rides getting there?
ALWAYS Supporting The Troops!!
Just before Thanksgiving, I got the following email from Jill, Pat (Tryon) Papenheim's daughter:
Hi,,,,My name is Jill and I am Pat Papenheim's daughter.  I just wanted to thank you for your posting on Tryons.com supporting my partner Jeff Morris through his deployment in Afghanistan.  He is now serving just outside of Kabul. One of the hardest things about being deployed is the feeling that you've dropped off the face of the earth and no one noticed.  I sent him an email asking him to check out Tryons.com and he really appreciated the supportive message and the prayers that have been sent his way.  Its really nice to know folks care.  If anyone wants to have a pen pal in Afghanistan, his email address is yondering03@hotmail.com.  He just loves messages from home. Thanks again, Jill

Thanksgiving At Grandpa's
It was a wonderful day with tons and I mean tons of food. Gwen, Johnny and girls came over to Grandpa's with turkey, ham and meatloaf and lots of trimmings. Gwen, bless her heart, took recipes from the Tryon cookbook, so it was green bean casserole, cheesy potatoes, the bean casserole that Jerilyn makes, Nancy's meatloaf etc. Wow, enough food for the entire Tryon Christmas. The girls had fun watching cartoons and playing with Big Grandpa Bear. Alexis (notice the boots) just loves to ride her horse (thanks to Sherry & Todd) and drag the dogs around by the leash. Not so sure the dogs like that, though. What a wonderful day. Click Here For A Few Pictures.

Congratulations To Sara And John!!
Sara (daughter of Donna and Bruce) is the expectant mother to be. This will be their first child and it is SUPER NEWS. Everyone is excited!! Congratulations to Sara and John, the little one is due in June.

Best Wishes To Coach McCarney!!
Dale and Janet sent a very nice congratulatory email to ISU Head Football Coach Dan McCarney. (ISU's all time winning coach) He responded with a very nice reply:
"Your loyalty, friendship and support has been amazing...we will always cherish our friendship with people like you and know that our lives are so much better because of it...if you ever need anything, all you have to do is call...the Tryon family is real special. Thanks for caring and thanks for your kindness."  We all wish the best to Coach Mac and his family.

Tryon University Trivia Team Finishes 5th!!
DBT's Tryon University Trivia Team finished in 5th place at the Nevada Trivia Contest Night. 7 students and DBT himself competed and competed well. There were 28 teams entered and the TU team finished just a couple of correct answers out of the money. We defeated 3 teacher teams and our arch rivals, a group of parents/teachers. We will compete again in January. Great job and Go Cocker Spaniels!!

Alexis and Cassidi Enjoy Halloween With Grandpa!!

Interesting Sale In Glidden Saturday!!
Maxine said in the Glidden Graphic Gold Nugget section there is an announcement for the Henry Kruger farm sale, south of Glidden next to Walkups and Nielson's. I think the date is 11/11. 11:00 a.m. They will sell the acreage first. Listed as a highlight of the sale are TWO Glidden Hatchery feed scoops!! Might be fun to go.......
Bad Ride For Cloud King!!
Cloud King, who was raised and sold by Johnny and Gwen, competed in the National Finals in Las Vegas last weekend. His first jump was scored 24 out of 25, but the rest of the jumps were 0s. He was severely injured on the first jump when he probably hit the chute's bar with his hind legs. Not good, he will not compete again. He may have broken both legs and is now in a sling. He will be put out to pasture, not destroyed. Johnny said they probably had the flank set too tight, he does not need that and they also "tested" him a week before, which was not needed and he may have been injured then. Pretty sad around here.
Congratulations Maxine!!
According to the Glidden Graphic:  The City has entered into a Senior Internship Program grant via the U.S. Department of Labor and has hired Maxine Tryon to work in the City Office no more than 20 hours per week.  Tryon is an employee of Elderbridge Agency on Aging and not the City of Glidden.  Tryon began her duties with the City on Oct. 23.  Lodge said she will be doing a variety of tasks, including filing records retention and working with the public. Thanks to Dale for spotting this and Congrats to Maxine!!
Pella Turns Away ADM!!
RT's ADM Fighting Tigers played hard and well, but went down to Pella, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-12 at Indianola. This ends a fine season with a conference championship to their credit. ADM made it to State last year and this year had an entirely new team, with many young players. Another great job of coaching by Randy. The family is very proud of you!!
RT's Volleyball Game To Be On The Web!!
Randy's ADM Volleyball team is currently ranked #8 in the state and they play #9 Pella, at Indianola, Monday night at 7:00 p.m. The game is being broadcast on the internet through a Pella radio station.. Click Here at game time to root on the Fighting Tigers. Winning team goes to state. Pella has a Division 1 player so it is going to be a rough and tough game. Go Tigers!!

Nice Article On Mike's Business!!
The Des Moines Register had a quick news story on Mike's business in last Saturday's paper. Click To Read. As always, we wish all of the Tryons the best in their business ventures! Go Plastic!!

ADM Football Makes Playoffs!!
Brett is Offensive Coordinator of the ADM Tiger football team and they needed to defeat Winterset by 13 pts. Friday night. They won 40-22 and now play @ Humboldt on Wednesday night. Go Tigers and Congrats to Brett and the team!! Click For More Info.
ADM Wins!! One Game From State!!
The Fighting Tigers whipped Knoxville Wednesday  night and now play Pella, at Indianola on Monday night. 7:00 p.m. Go Tigers and Good Luck Randy!! Winner goes to the state tournament in Cedar Rapids.
Brad On Extreme Makeover?
Some of you wanted to know when the episode of Iowa Extreme Makeover is going to air, the one where Brad tried to get on. It is this Sunday on ABC at 7:00 p.m....The only chance Brad has of being on is when they bring in the $50,000 spiral staircase, of which he is right behind Paige, who is doing the speaking.

Cloud King Sold!!
Gwen and Johnny's prize bucking bull has been sold to a big money guy from Denver. It was a deal for cash, 2 prize heifers, 2 calves and Johnny (www.flatlandbulls.com) gets hundreds of Cloud King's "straws". Cloud King will compete in the National Rodeo Finals in Las Vegas this weekend. Entry fees and winnings will go to the Denver guy, but if the bull bucks well it will really help out Gwen and Johnny's future bull breeding business. The deal was done after the good showing the bull had in Oklahoma a few weeks ago.

Latest On Aunt Helen!!
I got the following email from Jim H.
Auntie Helen has moved from the "assisted living facility" to her apartment. Her health has not improved but Jim and Nancy, feel they, along with daily Home Health Care attendants, can handle most of her needs. All phone calls should be directed to Jim and Nancy. (email DBT for phone number). Auntie Helen is looking forward to seeing her great, great granddaughter in November, when Chris, Lindsay, and Serenity visit her in Florida. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.........Jim
Tryon Christmas Set For Sunday, December 17th!!
Maxine called the other night and has reserved the Glidden Methodist Church for Sunday, December 17th at noon. The minister told her at church that we need to get it reserved as dates were filling up fast. Thanks to Max for doing this. Please make plans to attend, more details to follow.......
Jim And Nancy Enjoying A European Cruise!!
Jim and Nancy H. are due to return from a fantastic cruise in Europe. The weather has not been so good at the beginning, but they went to Monte Carlo, Italy, Greece etc. They should be returning this week. Jim said he was not very impressed with Italy as they had a couple of run ins with pick pockets. Quite an adventure.
Cloud King Finishes Fourth!!
Johnny and Gwen took their prize bucking bull to Oklahoma to compete with the nation's best bucking bulls and Cloud King finished fourth, winning $1100. He also qualified for the nationals at Las Vegas, but will probably not attend. He did not buck as wall as usual due to a bumpy release from the chute, jet lag and the extreme heat. He very easily could have won it. He was 1/4 of a point from 3rd.
ADM Defeats Carlisle!!
Randy's Fighting Tigers began their tournament season tonight by defeating Carlisle in 3 straight. They play Wednesday vs a tough Knoxville team. Last I heard they were ranked #3 and were conference champions with Carroll. Go Tigers!!
Prayers Needed!!
I got the following email from Jim Tryon: "Jeff Morris, a very special friend of Jill Papenheim (Pat's), will be leaving for Afghanistan in a couple of weeks.  He joined the Naval Reserves after 9-11 and was activated  a couple of months ago.  He has been in Virginia and is now in Mississippi, waiting for deployment.  Jill flew down from Oregon to spend last weekend with him.  If you could put this on the Tryon web page and pray for a safe deployment, would be greatly appreciated.  Met him last year.  A really great guy.  Maybe a prayer for Jill also....Jim"
Tryons.com ALWAYS supports our brave men and women in uniform and thank them for protecting our freedoms.

Cute Story From Deb (Iowa Alumus) In Ohio!
"Well last weekend was a long one for me.   I was so excited to finally get to see the Iowa Hawkeye football team.  Since the game was on at 8:00 PM, Scott and I actually had time to sit down and watch the TV.  As we were preparing for the game, I was cleaning up the dinner dishes and Scott was taking care of the kids' pajama time.  When I was asked to get the video camera out, it was clear there was trouble ahead. With a few giggles and screams, the Ohio State pep band appeared marching down our stairs with Scott in the lead.  Behind him was Emily (5 1/2), Hailey (niece, almost 6), Zach (nephew, almost 3) and Alex (2). They were all singing the Ohio State fight song...well at least that was what Scott told me.  After marching all around the living room, Emily dotted the "i" in keeping with the Ohio State band tradition. Once the excitement died down, the kids all lined up in their new Ohio State pajamas and Scott in his new OSU t-shirt and yelled, "Go Buckeyes!"  Dad / Uncle Scott was the hero of the night.  The evening went downhill for this Hawkeye fan since the Buckeyes beat the Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes will always be dear to my heart but it looks like I'm going to have to become an "Ohiowa" fan in order to keep up with this crowd! NOTE: Yes, I was wearing my Hawkeye sweatshirt! Enjoy the picture and GO HAWKS!" ......................Deb

It's A Hawkeye State!!
Iowa defeats ISU 27-17 in a fun game to watch. Both teams looked very good at times. Now, let's have both teams win their conferences. Go Hawks and Go Clones!! Click Here for Full Story.
Great News From Florida!!
Aunt Helen, as most of you know, has been struggling with various problems in the hospital and now she gets to come home!! I got the following news update from Jim H:
"Auntie Helen, is coming home from the hospital on Saturday, Sept. 16, after a month's stay for congenital heart failure. She has been in rehab for 3 weeks and is now strong enough to come home to her apartment. We will have "home care" nurses attending her until she gets back to normal. She wants to thank all of you for your prayers and thoughtful cards, e-mails and telephone calls."
This really is great news. She has been suffering from heart valve complications and various spells. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Aunt Helen and her family.

30 Years Ago........
Last summer was the 30th anniversary of the first Tryon Superstars, held in Glidden, June of 1976. Organized by Randy and Dick it included lots of fun, food and laughs. Rumor was that Bill and Jerry? skipped teacher inservice to participate. Bruce played basketball while wearing his watch. Ray did not make it back, but did play the next year. Randy barbequed in the rain. White belts must have been pretty popular? That is DBT and C.L. "Indian Wrestling". No surprise that C.L. won the checkers tournament. Click Here For A Few Good Memories Of Saps In ACTION!!! Photos by Nancy. Great seeing the old house, C.L. and the way we were. Click Here for slide show #2, same pictures, but they are uncropped. Notice the background furniture, cars, landscape etc. Wow!!

50 Years Ago.....
In the Glidden Graphic this past week they had a 50 years ago where Mr. and Mrs. T.R. Tryon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Harlan. In attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Tryon, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hulsebus, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Tryon, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Tryon, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Tryon, and Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Hulsebus.........I am sure many, many more people attended, but this is what the article said. 1957.....Wow....Click Here to go to the Tryon Bulletin Board and to read or add your own memories of the occasion.  Photos By Dale:

*Donna and Bruce are out on their big trip to the West and Canada. They just left the Black Hills, Yellowstone and are now in the Big Sky country.

Randy Wins The Bill Tryon Memorial!!
What a shootout!! What a day!! Randy (77) came from behind to win the 1st annual Bill Tryon Memorial Golf Tournament on the very last hole. Dick won the silver (78) Donnie (79) won the bronze and Mike finished fourth. Dick (The Cinderella Man) had a two stroke lead with 3 holes to play, but Randy shot a Par, Boogie, Par to earn the title. Mike and Donnie led at one time, too, as it see sawed back and forth. We had 15 golfers and over 20 attending. A big Tryon Salute to Jerry and Donnie for organizing this special event. The Calcutta auction was a big success as 8 people came away with pretty good money. The second flight was won by Tyler with Larry second, Todd third and Tim fourth. Great prizes, great food, great weather and a great time was had. It was so memorable to see all of the "next" generation playing, even though the over the hill gang kind of dominated? I had a great time playing with Mike and Donnie, just wish we could have played longer and with more people. Larry had 3 generations riding in his golf cart. One SAP locked his keys in his car, although many accused Randy of pulling a prank. Todd (1998 Tryon Open Champion) hit some enormous, record breaking drives, but he still lost to Tyler and Janet! My, how married life, a business and a family can slow a guy down. Janet beat Dale, too. Thanks to all for playing, it was a great way to end the summer. Many made quite an effort to attend and it was really appreciated! So special to see everyone. The family that plays together, stays together.
Click Here to see the worst golf swing in America, unbelievable that he almost won!
hint: He cannot see the ball (poor eyes and big stomach), has no rhythm or talent, but he must be a fierce competitor and yes, this is regular speed. Photos by Dale and Dick.

Summertime At The Zoo!!
DBT took his girls to the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines and had a super dooper time. Alexis and Cassidi put on their new birthday outfits and enjoyed the animals, the sunshine and the food. Gwen and Dick had a great time too. The tiger was the best, he put on quite a show. (as did the old turtle, what a guy! Who needs Viagra?) We cannot wait until the girls get a little older to really enjoy the experience. Click Here For The Slide Show.

Team Tryon At The Fair!!
Gaylord, Sandy, Kevin, Adam, Sara and Jacob spent a wonderful day at the Iowa State Fair. Then they headed over to Randy's for a swim and a look at the Silver Lab puppies. Great fun on a beautiful Iowa day. Photos by GT. Click to enlarge.

The golf team of Sandy, Lindsey, Janet and Donna defended their best ball golfing title at Lake View this week. They each won $40 and won by a whopping 8 points!! Wow, now Bruce has more explaining to do about these ringers from central Iowa. Nice job ladies!
DBT Closes On His House!!
Last Friday, DBT closed on his house deal. He is a Happy Boy! The last hurdle has been jumped. As Gerald Ford said, "The long nightmare is over." The sun has been shining ever since. The birds are singing and that dark cloud has moved on. What a relief! All day long and all weekend, he has not been able to get this song out of his head. Click the button to hear. (exactly in the middle)

Field Of Dreams!!
Bruce (life long Cub fan), Donna (was that a touchdown?), Sara and John attended a Chicago Cub game at Wrigley Field last weekend. Tickets were provided by John's sister, who works for Guiness and they were great seats. The weather was wonderful and the Cubs won and swept the hated Cardinals. Life is beautiful. Here are a few pictures.

Sioux Falls Storm Wins 2nd Straight Championship!
Todd, who is an assistant coach for the Storm, has helped them to a 17-0 record and their second straight indoor football league championship!! They defeated Lexington, Kentucky 72-64 Saturday night. They are calling them the greatest athletic team in South Dakota history! Click Here for the story of the game. Todd's bio:
Todd Tryon

Todd is returning to the Storm coaching staff for his second season as wide receivers coach and strength and conditioning coach. Tryon had a tremendous career as a player for the Sioux Falls Storm and Cobras. He played for 5 years and played anywhere from defensive back, safety, wide receiver, and long snapper. Todd is also an aspiring entrepreneur. he started the first 24-hour access gym in Sioux Falls called Tryon Gym. Tryon Gym has three locations in Sioux Falls and is the official training facility of the Sioux Falls Storm. Todd and his wife Wendy are also the proud parents of their son Tytan......Way to go Todd!!

Tryon Silver Lab Website Is On The Web!!
Randy (and his silent partner?) have put up a their own website to sell their latest batch of puppies. Looks great and is being hosted by Yahoo. Just Click Here To View and while you are there, why not buy a puppy? The address is www.tryonsilverlabs.com . Nice job Randy!!

*A sleepy summer day. Puppies For Sale!! Photo by Dale.

Janet Finishes Second In Golf Tournament!!
Janet and her partner finished second at a Story City Women's Best Ball Golf Tournament. They shot a blazing four under par. Last year they finished first, so they were the defending champions. Way to go Janet!! (Dale is taking the credit for coaching her)

Robbery In Lake View!!
Last weekend, The Tryon Gang went riding into Sac County and came away with quite a heist. Dale and Janet won $40, (3rd place 1st flight) Gaylord and Sandy won $25, (5th place 1st flight) plus GT won $5 for longest putt and GT won $25 for guessing the correct score. Randy and Marjean won $60 (1st place 3rd flight) and Donna and Bruce won $50 (2nd place 4th flight). Wow, now Bruce who works for the course, has to explain to everyone about these "ringers" he brought in from Central Iowa. Quite a weekend for the Tryon Gang of golfers.

Robbery In Indiana!!
Johnny and Gwen's prize bucking bull, Cloud King, competed for just the second time in his career last weekend in southern Indiana. 3 of the 5 judges had him as the winner, then scores were announced and he was nipped into second place. The promoter and owner of the event was seen running up the stairs and 3 and a half hours later, Cloud King was given 3rd by a half a point. The judges had long gone home, they only paid 2 places, the judges scores were replaced by different numbers with different colored ink.......The promoter's bull just happened to finish second, with his friend's first.......Not a happy outcome.....On the way to Indiana, they had 2 flat tires on the trailer. Now, how do you jack up a cattle trailer, with 4 bulls inside? Along Interstate 80, near Chicago? It was Uncle Don's old trailer that they bought at his sale and have fixed up.

Special Thanks, For A Special Party!
Last Sunday, Randy and Marjean graciously hosted a birthday party for Dick's girls, Cassidi and Alexis. Thanks to all for making it such a wonderful day. It was the first time Alexis had gone swimming in a big pool. Words cannot describe the gratitude felt by Gwen and I to all who made this such a memorable event.. Everyone had a great time. When DBT got home, Gwen informed him that measuring cups need to be filled to the top, so the angel food cake ingredients were WAY OFF, sorry about that, I will do better next time. No one was too sunburned, that was a surprise and it sure is a kick to watch the kids having so much fun. Click Here for the Slide Show (pictures by Randy) and music by Nat King Cole and Shirley Temple.

Tryon Golf Team Finishes 6th Overall!!
The Tryon golf team of Gaylord, Sandy, Dale, Janet, Randy and Marjean finished in 6th place of the championship flight in a best ball golf tournament in Creston on Saturday. It was hot, but so was the golf. The team shot a very good 66, six under par! They started out with birdie, eagle, birdie. Way to go TEAM TRYON!!

Janet Wins Golf Tournament!!
Janet won first place at the Homewood Golf Course in Ames this last week. She is now the 2006 Women's golf champion! She shot a 42, then came back with a blazing 37. All of those tips from Dale must be paying off? There was a short article in the Ames Tribune. Way to go Janet!!

Brett's Team Finishes Second In Iowa Games!!
Brett's put together basketball team finished 2nd in the Iowa Games, yesterday at Boone. They finished in FIRST PLACE last year. They lost in the final game against a team from Northwest Iowa. They were the winners of the Central Iowa qualifying tournament. Congrats Brett!!

Special Ed Olympic Athletes Hospitalized In Ames!!
Dozens of participants of the National Special Olympics have been rushed to Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa because of an unknown illness........Hey, wait a minute!! That's me?!.....Yes, I got to enjoy the Fourth with a terrible pain in my side. On the 5th of July, I ran around taking a half a dozen tests. My doctor, Pandu Bonthala, thought it was a kidney stone, because I had that trouble not long ago. Fortunately, he gave me extra tests and it turned out to be acute appendicitis. I was told to get to the emergency room at Mary Greeley. My new doctor, Doogie Howser, thought it might be an appendix, but we must operate immediately. I waited over 4 hours for an operating room to open up. Did you know July 5th is the busiest day of the year in emergency rooms? As I was laying there in the emergency area, the guy next to me started pounding on the wall and then burst out of his bed and started to run up and down the hall way, threatening to kill as many people as he could. The orderlies could not handle him, so they called the police. He was obviously high on something. I thought I was watching a TV series or something. A few moments later, I looked up and saw The Shiloh Boys (LT and WW) in shock and awe at the scene. Around 8 at night, I went into the operating room. Around midnight, I woke up. Spent a long night, but in the morning I was greeted by RT and Marjean. Jeff's Jodie came in and offered a sponge bath. (She works in the emergency operating rooms, but was not on duty that night) Anyway, to make a long story short, the doctor said it was the fattest appendix he had ever seen. (appendix, not patient), the size of a brat and was on the verge of rupturing. He is rather young, so I question how many appendixes he has seen. They let me out within 24 hours. Dale and Janet drove me home and I am doing well. Picture shows me ordering a pizza with extra cheese. I would like to thank everyone for their support. What a way to spend the summer.......dbt

57 Attend The Lake On July 4th!!
The weather, food and companionship was absolutely perfect. Participants raved at the wonderfully classic way to celebrate the fourth. Hats off to Donna and Bruce for hosting! (I think they are still cleaning up!) Deb and Scott came in all the way from Ohio (2100 mile trip) and Aunt Helen made a precious phone call from Florida to the gang that was gathered to enjoy the food and sunshine. Randy actually took a bath...when little Cole pushed his great uncle into the foamy brine. Nice Job Cole!! Did Randy fetch as well as his dog usually does? Great time by all and super thanks to Donna and Bruce!

Brad Wins The Bronze!!
Congrats to Brad on being recognized as one of Principal's most outstanding employees!!
Brad Kaufman - Customer Focus, Financial Strength, Operational Excellence, People Development
The Request for Proposal (RFP) process was slow, hard to use and costly until Brad Kaufman, senior retirement consultant team leaderRIS product management, took personal responsibility to improve the process.

Brad worked with employees in other areas of the company to find solutions for the problems plaguing the RFP process. In spite of the fact that he had no specific RFP writing experience, he came up with the new process by looking to the experienced writers to find problems points and solutions.

"Brad brought about a revolution," said his nominator. Through the innovative approaches to the new process, Brad cut the process time in half. He improved the data storage methods, improved the process by which paper copies are produced, therefore providing time for writers to develop their skills and provide quality responses. The new process has resulted in better quality RFPs, a decrease in turnover of RFP writers, an increase in accuracy and a cheaper, easier solution for content storage.

July 4th At The Lake!!
Just a reminder to try and make our annual get together at The Lake. All are welcome. Let's hope for a beautiful day. Deb and Scott Stoneman and their family are going to be there. Pictured is Alex, who is being called "Little James" because he is such a basketball nut. They are driving all the way from Ohio. So come get to know Alex and all of your cousins and great nieces and nephews. It's a great time, with great food. "Each is to bring potluck--a hot dish/cold dish/own dishes---and we'll have lots of lemonade, so if they want something different, they're to bring their own drink? We'll have a pool for the kids set up--blowing bubbles--hot tub for adults--deck of cards for adults-- floaters to lounge on in the lake--free boat rides--lots of good visiting--any surprises this year?--and let's hope for nice weather!!", writes Donna. Let's make this the best year, ever, to celebrate our family, friends and country!!

FREE Burgers and FREE Tryon T-Shirts!!
The Great Tryon White Out is being planned for Tuesday, June 27th, at The Hill near Grand Junction.. In conjunction with the Tryon Golf League, at NOON, on Tuesday, free barbequed burgers and free T-shirts will be distributed to any that can make it. (you must be present to receive your shirt) The golfers will tee off at 10:00 a.m. and around noon, between the rounds, the picnic begins. At 1:00 p.m., the golfers will play their second round. You do not need to golf to attend!! Just show up for a few laughs and a free burger and T-shirt, courtesy of our friends at The Graphic Edge!! Go shopping, skip work for an hour, go for a beautiful drive thru the Iowa farm land, go get your car washed, head to Des Moines to see friends and relatives, check out the garage sales, or play some golf with us, but stop in and enjoy the family!! T-shirts are for adults only and the early birds get their choice of sizes. You do not have to bring anything! Drinks are available through the clubhouse. Anyone can golf, but no one has to. Just stop in and say HELLO at the Tryon Golf League Open House And Great White Out!! (a big thanks to JJ and Big John for supporting this) Wanting to play golf a time or two? This would be a great day to do it!!

A Couple Of Photos.....By the Watsons as they tour NYC.

Sherry Takes A New Job!!
Sherry, daughter of Larry and Jan, has been hired to teach third grade at Laporte City. Congrats to Sherry and her family.

Tryon Pride!!
The over the hill gang entered a best ball golf tournament last Saturday at Adel and FROZE every part of their glorious naked bodies. It rained on most holes and the wind reminded me of the hurricane WW and I drove thru in Florida a couple of years ago. Well, Tryon Pride came through and Randy, Dale, Larry and DBT shot a blazing two under par 70 and finished in FIRST PLACE (in the second flight). 10th place out of 23 teams or so. Pretty darn good for the second team, we did not have JJ or GT to carry us. We won $100 and really enjoyed the course. This will become a regular event and hopefully next year the weather will cooperate and we can get a couple of teams to enter. Don't forget, tomorrow is WEEK TWO of the Tryon Golf League. We need more players!! Weather should be perfect and there will be lots of laughs and lots of poor golf!

Off To The Big Apple!!
Nancy and Warren are going to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary by flying to New York City on Monday and enjoying some of NYC's finest tourist attractions. Numerous excursions are being planned, with the highlight, a tour of Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. They have tickets for the Letterman Show on Tuesday, the 13th, so look for them in the audience. Does Nancy have a dumb pet trick that we do not know about? Thursday they will take in a Yankee game. Wow, Happy 25th anniversary to the Watsons!!

Fun In The Sun, July 4th!!
Yes, you are invited. Here is the email, sent by our hosts, Donna and Bruce.
"We are looking forward to hosting the July 4th celebration again (since 1976??)---same time (Dale eats at noon--will he be the first in line??!), same place (east side of Black Hawk Lake).  Let's hope we have a great crowd--even some cousins from both sides?! Each is to bring potluck--a hot dish/cold dish/own dishes---and we'll have lots of lemonade, so if they want something different, they're to bring their own drink? We'll have a pool for the kids set up--blowing bubbles--hot tub for adults--deck of cards for adults-- floaters to lounge on in the lake--free boat rides--lots of good visiting--any surprises this year?--and let's hope for nice weather!! :)" Let's make this the best year, ever, to celebrate our family, friends and country!!

Celebrating Memorial Day By Honoring Those Who Serve!!
Parade Marshall in Glidden this year is Darrell Nielsen, veteran of Korea, 50 years ago!! Photo shows Darrell and Marjorie enjoying the attention. Thanks to Dale for sending the picture.

Big Weekend At The Lake!!
Lots of Stevens, and JJ's families, plus the Watsons all up at the lake enjoying the Iowa wind and celebrating Bruce's and Jerry's birthdays. Tons of food and gallons of drink flowed freely. The highlight, I am told, was a wild game of kick ball, hosted at Jerry's. Photo is Bruce receiving his well earned Tryon Basketball League Championship banner. Rumor has it that Lynn received a speeding ticket on a moped??? or was it for too many obscene tattoos? or did the officer think his bald head was a spot light shining at other cars? or was it for having too young of a girl riding with him? (oops, that was his girlfriend) or was he just trying to be nice by taking the little ones for a ride? Anyway, how big was that fine? Sounded like a wild weekend.

Sad News From The Lake.......
Donna and Bruce's neighbor, Jack Ludwig, drowned earlier this week. Donna and Bruce had planned on going to Chicago to celebrate Bruce's birthday and watch the Cubs, but here is the sad email that Donna just sent:
"The missing guy from a boat--here at Lake View--is our neighbor-to the north, Jack Ludwig, age 72. As he left in his boat, he waved and smiled at me, as I was watering my flowers Tues. am--and he was later seen by fishermen on the west side of the lake--but then someone saw his boat, being blown to shore--empty! His baseball cap was found on a nearby beach. We're all praying/hoping his body is found before all the boaters/swimmers are on the lake for this big weekend. Of course, the heavy winds won't stop! He and his wife Candy always enjoyed our families on the 4th of July! They have no children--and always enjoyed watching ours. All of us on the east side have kept all outside lights shining at night--until his body is found." All of our thoughts and prayers go out Jack's family and neighbors.

Josh Lamberson Signs Pro Football Contract!!
Josh (Mandy's friend) had a professional tryout in Chicago and was immediately signed by the River City Rage, an arena football team from St. Louis. The Rage are currently 8-1 and their starting QB was just injured for the season. Josh still plans on seeking his graduate degree and coaching football at NWMS next year. The Rage play in downtown St. Louis and all of their games are on ESPN radio.

Gwen & Johnny's Bull Wins Championship!!
Continuing that great Tryon tradition of developing champions, Cloud King (formally known as Little Grey) went to Ohio for an 8 second contest. (Riding in style in the back of Don Densmore's old stock trailer.) He finished in FIRST PLACE and brought home his very first championship in his very first try! He participated in a futurity for young bulls. They are being "rid'en" by mechanical devices. There were 15+ entered and Cloud King finished 1st and was asked to NOT come back. He won by over 6 points and is now considered TOO GOOD to compete in these type of events. He brought home a prize of $500+. Next competition is in Texas in a couple of weeks. Click Here to view the ride and Click Here to view the slide show. Drop Zone, their other bull also competed but took quite a fall. I will put that video up shortly. Johnny is the one in the light brown vest. Three publications are going to have articles about Cloud King! They had a little trouble getting him back into the corral. I would call that a good sign, but what do I know. Gwen and Johnny are quite proud!!

Tryon Gym's Latest Promotion And Expansion!!
In the middle of the field of the Arena Football League Champion Sioux Falls Storm, rests the logo for Todd, Wendy and Lynn's Tryon Gym. They now have 3 such gyms in Sioux Falls. Open 24 hours, 7 days a week and a supplier of health aids, the Sioux Falls group keeps growing and growing. There is also a brand new web site, called www.tryongym.com and it looks marvelous. Click the link to view. Nice job and with no help from DBT. We wish all of the tryons the best in their business adventures. Congrats to Todd and the gang!!

It's just a great chance to get together. Gambling is optional, but encouraged. Last one to arrive will have to ride the cart with Randy. And everyone needs to help Dick find his ball. To help all of us improve, I put together a couple of clips of Golf's Greatest Golf Swings. Bruce Wins The Tryon Basketball League!!
Bruce's LV Surf defeated DBT's Red Necks, 772-683, to win his first ever fantasy Championship Banner!! The Surf started their tournament run by knocking off the #1 seed, Brad's Air Jordan. Bruce then nipped Dale's Ames Attack before running the Red Necks out of the gym. The turning point may have been his trade with Watson? but what a great time to get hot. Congratulations To Bruce and The Surf.

Nancy Will Host Easter!!
If you are looking for a place to go for Easter, the Watsons are hosting. Just let Nancy know. Doug, Jodie, Dale and Janet are planning to attend. All are welcome, starts at 12:00, noon.
The Latest On Uncle June.....
I got the following update from Cousin Ron:
The Dr removed Dad's cast Tuesday after wearing it for nine weeks. The healing process is not quite finished so he will wear a velcro splint for the next month. This will allow him some time to have more flexibility and mobility as he begins to walk again. He says he will be ready to mow the yard again as the season approaches. Dad is one of those guys that will fertilize, and water, and then mow every 3-4 days. Besides the nice lawn, he loves the exercise. Dad was a very good patient but will be much happier without the cast. He appreciated all the cards from family. Thanks......Ron
Tryon University Shines!!
A week or so ago, a student asked me if I would sponsor a team to compete in the Nevada Community's Trivia Night. It is a fund raiser that Nevada does to raise money for education, it is done by the community, not the school. So 7 students and and myself competed with 32 teams and approximately 256 of our areas sharpest. There were college students, community leaders, and contestants of all ages from the surrounding area...Some real sharpies.....Well, the team from Tryon U finished 5th out of 32 teams and was just two correct answers from 3rd, which paid big bucks. Our kids had a blast and we will definitely do this again. It was lots of fun. Go Cockers!!

Beth ends a wonderful basketball career. We are all so proud of her and the Mustangs. Congrats on some super seasons!!

Lucky Dick
Just had a MRI done on his knee last Friday and then went to a knee specialist on Monday. The Sap fell down the steps after stepping on a doggie, chew toy and hurt the knee joint on December 22. The doctors now think there is a very small fracture where the ligament attaches to the knee. It did not show up in the X-rays. We are hoping it will heal in another 6-8 weeks. It's too late for a cast or brace. If it does not heal, one doctor said he would have to live with it, the other said they might do an exploratory surgery procedure......Great, maybe this will improve his golf swing?

Morningside Earns A No. 1 Seed!!
Beth's Mustangs are trying for a three peat. Three time Division II Women's Basketball National Champions, that is. The seeds were announced for next week's tournament and guess who's picture is prominently displayed on the National site...Why Beth's of course. Good Luck Ponies! The tournament is played in Sioux City, which does not hurt. Morningside has one of the four No. 1 seeds. Good Luck Bethie!! Kirk Landon Wins State Wrestling Championship!!
Who?......Well, congrats to Carol Dean's grandson, Kirk Landon, for winning the 135 lb. Class 1A State Wrestling Championship for Audubon, this past weekend in Des Moines. Kirk is a senior. He won his championship match, 10-0, Wow!! I bet some of us saw him at Terry's funeral last year at this time. Great Job!! Congrats to Carol Dean, Kirk and their families.

The Latest On Uncle June
I got the following update from Cousin Ron.
"It has been nearly 2 weeks since Dad broke his leg. He was home as of last Friday and he is getting along pretty well. His spirits are good and he has really enjoyed some of the ornery cards sent. Thanks. He goes back for x-rays on March 7 to make sure the healing is going fine. As long as he doesn't chase Mom around too much, the cast will come off in 4-6 weeks and then some re-hab at the hospital. Dad enjoys watching sports on his wide screen, the Olympics and especially the Clones and the Hawks. He says he'll be back mowing his yard this summer and he really enjoys that. Over the weekend we were talking about all the years they took CL and Dort to the state basketball tourneys (tickets provided by Gaylord). They all enjoyed that so much. Later "T""

Beth's Ponies start their conference tournament this week and the Nationals next week. Good Luck To All!!
Hunk A Hunk Of Burning Love!
Hot Springs Tonight!! Man, did the sparks fly on Valentine's Night!! Wow!! A certain couple we know that lives in Norwalk had their doorbell ring in the middle of the night. Seems the neighborhood was all ablaze. Sparks were shooting everywhere and a fire had started in their backyard. It was just past midnight when they called the fire department. Chad tried to use a "hose" to put it out but Em said it wasn't long enough? to reach the fire. The bushes were smoldering and there was a grass fire heading towards the house. One neighbor came with an "extender" and the hose was able to reach. (Chad needed a little help? Is that what they call those things?) The fire was put out before the fire department showed up. Soooooo? Like how did this thing start? Chad wearing that dragon outfit again? A little game of light my fire? Did we pick up some flaming fish recipe in Japan recently? Blazing Saddles?...the game of cowboys, spurs and branding irons? (not to mention the beans) or did the passion play knock over the candles again? Who knows? but the neighbors are sure asking. This could be a Sap Of The Month story but it is more like Legend Of The Month. Anyone else need help in relighting that fire, please contact Chad. It sure must have been some Valentine's gift.
Sap Of The Month Stories?
Dick, on his way to the last day of school before Christmas vacation, fell down his stairs, the inside ones. His right foot stepped on a doggie chew bone and went flying into the air, his left leg awkwardly, was pinned back and underneath. He went down all six. His left knee is a mess. (Imagine the weight?) He went to school, but right after went to the hospital and had x-rays taken. No broken bones, but he will not know for a week or two or another test if ligaments or cartilage are torn. His superior athletic ability, flexibility and pure strength may have saved him from a more serious fate. What a way to begin Christmas vacation! Can't get in and out of a car, can't sleep and can barely make it downstairs to the office. Any bets the old Santa had not started shopping yet?

Josh has been staying at RT's this past week, enjoying the Christmas activities. He parked his car on the hill. Everyday, Randy lectured to people to be sure to not back into Josh's car. Well, Marjean was in a hurry to mail some cards and Whammo. She nailed his brand new, 2005 Monte Carlo that his dad had purchased  for  him. There was major damage to both vehicles. Can you imagine, someone not listening to RT?

Uncle June Breaks His Leg!!
I got the following email from Cousin Ron:
"My Dad was out snow blowing the driveway Wednesday, stepped back and fell and snapped his leg. He still can't figure what made him fall but it broke both bones below the knee. It was a clean break and a specialist set it Thursday with a full leg cast from crotch to toes. He will come home this Friday PM or Sat morning. Well wishers can send a card to

Chad And Emily Are Back From Japan!!
They just completed a wonderful trip to Japan with Emily's parents. They were able to spend some quality time with Kazuko, our family's foreign exchange student from the 1960's. Chad said they had a wonderful time and Kazuko was just full of old Glidden stories and memories. Here are a couple of photos by Chad. Click to enlarge.

Tryon Flashback
Ok, it's really not my ego, but just trying to teach myself how to convert VHS to flash files for the web, with my new computer. About a year ago, DBT receives the Golden Apple Award from WHO-TV and Allied Insurance.  Many of you did not see it on TV, it was bumped by Johnny Carson's death and tributes. Hard to imagine? Click Here to view. (Sorry if I embarrassed the family) If I get this down, look for more flashbacks. The first 15 seconds are vhs static, sorry, trying to fix those things.

Really Sad News
One of the tough things about running this web site, is occasionally bad news must be reported. This is a shocker and I just hate to ruin your day, but Dick and Barb are ending their 13 years together. (Barb's choice, not mine) The separation is very amiable. As most of you know, Barb's health has not been very good and she has decided that this is in her best interests. We all wish her the best. She has been such a vibrant and important asset to our family. Everyone loves to be around Barb. We both have very strong family support and both of our families have been just super in accepting each of us. No regrets.... it was so obvious how well Barb fit into our family the first day she showed up. Many great and memorable times have been had by all. We hope our loved ones will be understanding and supportive. (Gwen has been just wonderful.) Short term this is going to be tough but long term it will probably be better for the both of us.  No phone calls please and I will email more information and details to the immediate family as needed.
Chad And Emily See Kazuko!!
Chad and Emily are visiting Japan with Emily's family. Em's father does quite a bit of business with Japan. They were able to spend a little time with Kazuko, our favorite Japanese foreign exchange student of the mid-1960s. Remember when Kazuko visited a couple of years ago? Tryon Flashback
Back in the mid-1980s, the hot spot in Ames, Iowa was the Tryon Card Shop. Click Here To Enjoy an actual Channel 5 interview with the owner and founder of Tryon Cards. A cameo appearance by Donnie, and "great" deals for the young investor. Gosh, I think I still have a Jose Canseco rookie card that I bought at Dale's for $20! I wonder what it is worth now? and Pete Rose? the Goonies?, Michael Jackson? that poor kid bought a Vince Coleman?.... Heh Heh Heh
