GT Honored At SAI Convention!!
In a moving ceremony, Gaylord was honored for
his years of service by the organization he helped to create. The
School Administrators of Iowa paid tribute to all of his contributions to
education in Iowa. Even the governor made flattering comments about
Gaylord's service to education in Iowa. Many family members were present. What a
surprise!! What an honor.
Tim Gets New Job!!
That's right, rumor has it that Tim is switching banks and is heading over

Christmas Auction Raises $609 For
Worthy Cause
The Christmas celebration in Ames
touched the hearts of all as the Tryons laughed, teased and competitively bid on
various items donated by members of the family. All of the proceeds will go to
the Tryon Fund to help a fellow family member in need. I can just hear Ray, CL
and Mom laughing as they saw the family bid on such strange objects as M & M
cookies made by Nancy ($45 from Doug for Jodie). A beautiful handmade quilt made
special by Connie's Mom went for $155. Golf @ Brooks and Funny Barn for 4
collected over $50. Tanner bought a blue goose? and a velvet painting (directly
from DBT's bachelor pad...hey Tan Man, those dogs playing cards pictures look
great too). Donnie jumped for the Mexican hat. Barb (who is on probation from
her last sale) went crazy for a Barbie doll tree ornament. (cost Dick $20,
retails $3.50) LT bought a Tryon Feed Store sign.....Danny and Connie went for a
Bed and Breakfast in Red Wing Minnesota....Jerilyn bought the Grandma Got Run
Over By The Reindeer blanket......GT shocked everyone with a whooping $50 bid
for two Christmas ornaments Mom made....Tryon University sweatshirts, plenty of
clothes, ISU basketball tickets (the game had already started)....It was wild
and I probably forgot half of the stories because it went so fast......(someone
remind me and I will add to the story). We had a great turnout, it was so much
fun to see all of the babies growing up.....Maxine.....Scott and Shelly/family were
there...Bill was going to surprise us, but the storm hit on Saturday......Thanks to all
that battled the bad weather and our thoughts were with all of those who could
not have attended.....Thanks for the memories.....
Christmas In Ames This Sunday
Thought we would bring you up to date on Tryon
Christmas Party. It will be at Dale and Janets Home in Ames. It will be
Sunday, December 17th at noon. We are counting on each of you to tell
members of your family, that they are also welcome. You might let us
know on how many will be here. Janet has recommended that you bring the
following: (Maxine=desert), (Bill and Sally=pop), (Dale and Janet=Meat and
house), (Gaylord and Sandy=Relish), (Larry and Jan=Escalloped corn), (Jerry
and Jerilyn=Calico Beans), (Bruce and Donna=Desert), (Dick and Barb=Green Bean
Casserole), (Randy and Marjean=Relish), (Warren and Nancy=Desert). Tell
the Grandchildren to bring a salad. All brothers and sisters could also
bring a snack or pop. In case you are wondering about rolls and potatoes, our
kids are taking care of this.
If you want a gift, you should bring a gift to
exchange, between $10.00 and $15.00. Anyone beyond High School is
elgible for this. Be sure to mark men or women on the gift. High School
students and below will be exchanging gifts. Nancy is taking care of the
name drawings. We thank her for taking care of this for us. Gifts to be
exchanged at 2:00.
At 2:30 we would like to have a family auction with all
proceeds going to Steve's Cause. I think we can have some fun doing this.
If you have something laying around the house that you don't want, but yet it
might be something that someone else might want then bring it. I have a couple
of new shirts (never been worn) and they don't fit me. They might be
worth a dollar or two to someone else. Connie's mother made a beautiful quilt
that she would like auctioned off with proceeds going to Steve's Cause.
Look around the house as there must be something there. Bring a lot of
money. Also, anyone that can't make it can certainly send the item to us
and we will see that it gets auctioned off. Send to Dale Tryon, 2712 Pierce
Ave., Ames, Iowa 50010. Certainly, no one needs to feel obligated to
bring anything toward this auction, nor do they need to bid on anything.
I think it will be a lot of fun and very worth while.
At 3:32 Dale and Janet will be going to ISU/Drake Womens
Basketball Game. Maybe some of you basketball fans might also want to
attend this game. No, Dale ain't buying the tickets.
In case of bad weather, just turn to the famous Tryon Web Page.
I'm sure Dick will have it up to date.
Looking forward to having a good Family Christmas Party.
Dale and Janet
Steve'sRaffle Results!
E-mailed From Sandy (edited version)
The results are as follows...Becky Gangestad
(Jim's daughter) won the quilt and quilt rack. Nancy Watson won the
crocheted afghan and Jodie Stokke won the crocheted pineapple centerpiece.
You might note when announcing that the quilt was
made by Debbie, quilt rack by Jim and the crocheted items by Maxine. It
was a lot of time and effort on their part.
I want to send a thank you out through your
newsletter, but it is real hard to find the words that would do justice with
all of the family support that we have received. We are so overwhelmed
with the generosity. It will be coming, but I need a bit of time to
think of what to say. Especially all of the time and effort Gaylord put into
this project, thanks so much!!
Steve is doing real well. We had a meeting
with his lawyer on the 17th and it went real well. Was a hard day for
Steve, though. He was real nervous. He is excited for Christmas.
It's at my house this year, so he will get lots of visits. Mary Jane
will be bringing his daughter (Heather) back, also. Her only wish for
Christmas this year was to spend it with her Dad. She's quite a
determined little gal.
Jim's been real busy with his job and all of his
honey-do's. He was complaining to our Amish friend this morning that now
he has to put the Christmas lights up outside. They don't have to worry
about those sort of things with having no electricity...HA!
I'm thrilled and a bit nervous about starting my
new job Monday. I've been on midnights for 3 years and I was finally
able to bid on a day job where I have weekends off. I was holding out to
keep my weekends off. I'll be working as the only custody officer in the
library with a 75 inmate capacity. Ought to be interesting. I
will be so thankful to get some normal sleep. My life has been based
around naps. (I get such a kick out of Dale when he states it's time for
a nap.)
Thanks again for all you are doing for the family.
Oh, and when ya get a minute would you change our post office address to:
jsgray@nemonet.com.
Take care!
Love, Sandy
Mandy Named Second Team All-State In Volleyball!!
Baby Mandy, daughter of Randy and Marjean, was named to the DM
Register's All-State Volleyball team. She led ADM to an outstanding
season. Great job, especially for a junior!! Now if she can just whip this mono
thing and concentrate on basketball....Go Tigers!!
Barb's Mom Is Doing Better
Finally, Barbie is home....DBT was about to starve to death, well, not
quite. The McDonald's up the street you know. Barb spent the last week in
Rochester, Minnesota with her Mom and family. The latest is major gall bladder
infection that has spread throughout her body. A heart acting up, filling her
lungs with fluid, partial pneumonia and numerous other ailments. She had a good
Saturday, but terrible Friday. They are still running tests. Thanks to all who
have expressed concern. Sure is great to have a big family.
Hearts Tournament Postponed!!!!!
Sorry for the inconvenience, but last Monday Barb went
up to Albert Lea, Minnesota because her Mom was in the hospital. Wednesday they
rushed her to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, where she is today, undergoing
numerous tests. It is pretty serious, major infection inside her body, heart
acting up, slight pneumonia, lungs filling with fluid etc. We thought after
tests that she might be released Friday, but Friday has been her worse day. Barb
will stay up there a few more days and Hearts just isn't going to work out
Sunday. Sorry for the late notice, but we were really looking forward to
hosting. We will need to find another date, maybe around CL's birthday. Please
inform your kids that may have come. I plan on calling all brothers and sisters
tonight.....Thanks for being understanding..........Dick and Barb......(a few
prayers could help too, no one knows how serious this may or may not be.......)
ADM Girls' Basketball Update
Mandy missed 7 days of school and started basketball last Thursday 30%
health. She showed great progress last weekend and this week- currently at
70% speed. We have a scrimmage this Saturday at Osceola and our Jamboree
next Monday night- Mandy will not play in these two. Our first game is
Thanksgiving Friday night (11-24) vs Guthrie Center. We plan on playing
her then... time will tell. My team is sure weak without her! Go
ISU- we plan on going to their bowl game over the holidays!! I'm buddies
with the "Mac" family you know!!!!!!!!!!
ADM Volleyballers Defeat Carroll Kuemper 3-2
In a thriller that had the fans with lumps in
their throats, the Tigers edged Kuemper in the 5th game with rally scoring.
Mandy looked great. (she played well too, but Travis has to work on that hair
do) A very large group of Tryons (too numerous to mention) were in attendance,
especially the babies. (Including the biggest baby, Barb) Ron's grandkids, Tim's
bunch, the newbies, it was quite a site and quite a night. There actually was
pizza after the game. (Tim and Kim paid for it) Melody managed to stay off of
the gym floor. Chad was all over the officials, hollering at the lines lady. Jan
brought some dog food for little Jack, at least it looked like dog food. Little
Cole appears to have more chins and a bigger stomach than Uncle Dick. (they
kinda drool the same too) The match was really exciting with ADM winning the
first two games and Kuemper winning the next two. During the pizza party in RT's
room, someone noticed a strange odor and a week old soiled diaper was found from
last week's game. Seems Watson took Cole's messy one and hid it in Randy's desk
drawer. (he never found it) Great time for all, go Tigers! (Happy Birthday
Darrell)
"Does
Anyone Ever Feed This Kid?"
One of C.L. truisms spoken many times at family
gatherings. This time, I can just hear him laughing. Seems cute little Jack, one
of the newest members of the family, was visiting the Watsons with his parents
Shonna and Eric. The little guy is just starting to crawl around. After a while
somebody noticed that Jack wasn't around. Upon investigation, he was discovered
eating out of Frisco's bowl. (Watson's half dog/half rat) He had dog food all
over his face and was drinking the puppy water. What a mess, but he was loving
it. Seems like every time they put him down after that, he made a bee line
straight for the Alpo. Now maybe the Watson's are using gourmet baby food for
that baby dog, but I can just hear C.L. say, "Do you ever feed that
kid?" At least we now have some ideas on what to get Jack for Christmas.
Are there any good pet stores online?
Brett Begins Morningside Career
Basketball officially started with Midnight Madness a couple of weeks
ago when Brett and the boys took to the floor. Their opening game is with Iowa
State, duhhhhh, at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. Piece of cake. I bet ISU is shaking
in their boots. Seems like Brett was a little excited his first week of
school when he took a shower (co-ed dorms) and one of his friends took his
clothes. All he had was a teeny-weeny tiny ehhh....... wash cloth. He had to
sneak through the halls and into a neighbors room. (Betty's?) He borrowed her
eh-dress and dripping wet walked the rest of the way to his room, only to find
that it was locked. Gees, I hope I got this story correct. (The press never
makes mistakes, unless it has to do with Presidential candidates from Texas).
Brett then had to shout at the top of lungs for his laughing roommates to open,
which just brought out more people into the hall. Man was he embarrassed until
his roomies let him in. Everything ended fine until Brett realized it wasn't a
dress he had on, but an apron. Nice harvest moon. Thanks to Julie for the
full details. (did this come from Hillary's lecture on factually inaccuracies?)
Pat Tryon's Daughter Runs In The Portland
Marathon
Not a lot of runners in this family, but someone has some talent. Not
only did she run, but she also completed the grueling 26 mile test of endurance.
Jill Papenheim ran the distance in 4 hours and 27 minutes (about the time of one
of Dick's meals) Is the survival series next? She is living in Eugene, Oregon
and working as a physical therapist. Nice Job Jill! Now did she get that running
speed from Pat???? I don't think so.
Dale And Janet Follow The Clones
All the way to Oklahoma State, ISU super fans, the now retired Dale and
Janet head south to root for the Cyclone football team. They saw a
tremendous game, with ISU winning in the last seconds. Dale thought him being
there was the difference. On the way back home, they bought a brand new (kinda)
Buick. Leather seats and the works, wow!....did he have Donnie and the boys
place a rather large bet on the Cyclones when they were in Vegas?????
Web Page Is In Transition
No, Dick has not been counting his money or
doing yard work, but the home page is in transition. We are now, finally on
@home, the AT&T Cable Broadband connection. We had some email and setup
problems, but it looks like all is back to normal. Sorry for the inconvenience,
but I am learning as I go. It is fast, always on and I love the videos and music
that is available. Stop by for a demo, sorry for the lack of a home page.

The Ozarks may never be the same. The Wild Bunch took off from Iowa at 11:00 p.m. and drove a
HUGE Winnebago from Iowa to Branson, driven entirely by RT.
This was in celebration of the end of the school year and a last family
vacation. Randy got tired at about 11:15 p.m., just outside of
Des Moines and called for help from others to drive…Warren was already
asleep and DBT was pooped from getting up at 4:30 a.m. for Driver Ed during the
week. The women just laughed and
snored away. Randy, the Sap, really
was tired. Seemed he took motion
sickness pills right before leaving and he noticed (after we got back) that they
make you drowsy and you shouldn’t operate vehicles. (RT got motion sickness on
the “It’s A Small World” ride at Disneyland). How we made it a swerving and
unnerving, is anyone’s guess. We
pulled into Branson for breakfast. Had
a great time renting watercraft, playing miniature golf, taking in a show,
seeing the sights and of course, shopping.
The miniature golf championship was under protest after Marjean claimed
victory (a week later she was seen playing golf with a “pirated” miniature
golf ball). (pink) RT organized
it all and we stayed in a beautiful condo, overlooking a golf course.
Dick stayed wide awake the entire trip, but Brett and Tanner slept most
of the way. (see pictures) Nancy was her usual introverted self until a rousing
game of spoons woke her up. We hope this can become an annual affair with lots
more Tryons attending next year.
E-mail from Bill.....Ashley...daughter

make it.......Bill proud grandpa...This is my first grand child to graduate
so far....
Donna Being Pursued By Stalker????
While purchasing an item on eBay, Dick is contacted by one of Donna's old flames. He is
really interested in knowing about his former classmate. He asks question after question
about what happened to that girl named Donna. (You know she had quite a reputation with
the men folk of Carroll County) Donna tells the story about a May basket delivery to this
guy's house and the chase to the car. She says one of her older brothers locked the door
on her and this guy caught Donna and stole a kiss
. This guy tells a different
story
.Seems he was minding his own business when Donna attacks him with her May
basket in hand. The guy runs like crazy, but Donna tackles him, gets him down and starts
smooching. He went away crying! Now, which story seems more likely???? This guy's username
was OutOnParole#15478631 and was a former Glidden resident living near the water tower.
The incident must have happened sometime in the late 1940s as far as I can tell. I assured
the man I never had a sister named Donna that would act like that
..are you sure it
wasn't a Nancy????
Mandy Qualifies For State Track Meet !!
We froze our cans off. Rain, wind, cold and Baby Barb forgot her coat. (So
gentleman Dick gives her his) Randy, Marjean, Darrell, Marjorie, Dick and Barb all cheered
Mandy and Gwen during the district track meet at Huxley. The highlight was the 4 X 800
relay, when Mandy got the baton 50-60 yards behind and won going away. She also finished
first in the 400m hurdles during a driving rain. (She almost fell down) It was great to
see those girls try so hard. Nice job Gwen and Mandy!

The Latest News On Lucille Tryon
Mom fell last Thurs while making her bed. She cracked two ribs and chipped her
clavical bone. Bruised very bad and is in a lot of discomfort. I just happened
to be enroute to Iowa when this happened. On Fri. she semed to be slipping.
She had slurred speech. somewhat disoriented. The nurses thought it was probably the
codine that they were giving her for the pain. Sat morning we took her to the Dr.
and they found a severe bladder infection. Said that was the problem and sent us on
our way with antibodies. After another miserable night took her to emergency room
Sun. morning. That is when they found a low sodium count and admitted her. She
has finally started to acome out of it a little . Just got off the phone with Lue
and said she rested fair last night. To make matters worse for me, I started a new
job yesterday so I had to hed back to Colo. Sun. afternoon. I am now going to be
driving a semi in Denver for the U>S> Postal Service. I know all the postal
jokes so don't even think about it. As I know more about Mom's condition will let
you know. Cousin Jim T.

Nancy Is This Month's Sap!
It's almost becoming a tradition, but this month's Sap is
Nancy. It's a sad story really. Seems she was at the quilt shop doing an errand for a
certain family member when she figures out she is running late and her family is waiting
on supper. She jumps into her white car and heads down the road. She notices numerous
McDonald's sacks all over the floor and starts cussing Warren for leaving the car in such
a mess (he isn't around). She then notices the ash tray is full of cigarette
butts
what???? Who has Brett been running around with lately????? After going a
few miles, Nancy suddenly realizes that this isn't her car! She drove the red blazer. What
a Sap!! She drives the car back and tries to explain it to a guy named "Bubba".
She then hurries on home, trying to figure out how to blame all of this on Warren. It's
got to be his fault. Nancy, Sap of the month. Who says teachers are under a lot of stress?
Brad Heads To Florida For Spring Training!
Just beating the big storm, Brad got out of town and made it
to sunny Florida for spring training with the Houston Astros. Last year, Brad was with the
New York Yankees and the year before with the San Diego Padres. He became a free agent and
signed a deal with the Astros. He lockers next to Dwight Gooden. Hey, didn't that guy get
bumped out of the league for using drugs? Good luck Brad!
Believe It Or Not
 | Dick sold his underwear on eBay!
(Tryon Christmas gift) it was purchased by a lady from Vegas. ($7.50) |
 | Warren's Tryon grab bag gift (3 shares of Engineering Animation) is now worth $45 |
 | Dale put his book up on eBay and an idiot bought it for $1.00 (it cost Dale $7 to
publish it) |
 | Bill picked Senator John McCain to win the South Carolina primary and the Republican
nomination. |
 | Donnie takes back Cookie the Wonder Dog! |
 | Brad is doing so poorly in fantasy basketball, he is leaving town! |
 | Glidden Hatchery stocks were over $93,000 one day and $88,000 the next. |
 | Mark has a new job, but Bill won't tell anyone about it. (CIA conspiracy?) |
 | Nancy went shopping and bought so much, the credit card company called her husband to
see if the card was stolen! |
 | Ross Perot is talking about entering the race again! Yawn!!!! |
 | Warren and Larry actually are getting paid for winning the Tryon Contests! (almost
everyone sent money in after the email, thanks) |
Bob Epperly Passes Away
Our hearts and prayers go out to the friends and family of
Bob Epperly. One of the nicest guys I have ever known. A true friend of the
family. All of the info I know at this time is from the following email.
Wanted to drop you a note that Uncle Bob passed away today. He had a heart attack
after suffering for the last several years with alzheimer's in the nursing home in
Carroll.
The viewing will be Sunday night (don't know the time yet) at Dahn &
Woodhouse in Glidden and the funeral will be Monday at the Glidden Methodist Church at
2:30 pm. He was a special part of our family and will be missed greatly.
If you could let the Tryon's know I would appreciate it.
Thanks alot and hope this finds you doing well.

Latest News On Lucille Tryon (From Jim)
An update on Moms condition. Although she is steadily
improving, she is still unable to live on her own. She seems to be doing okay at her new
apt. I am going to send along her address if any you would like to drop her a line.
She would enjoy hearing from the family.

Gaylord's Retirement Announcement
Fax to: SAI Representative Council
From: Gaylord Tryon
Date: Tuesday, February 1, 2000
Re: Retirement Announcement
I just wanted you to know that yesterday (January 31, 2000), during the
re-scheduled Executive Committee meeting, I shared my intentions to retire
as executive director of the School Administrators of Iowa. My plans are
to work full-time through December 31, 2000. I have agreed to serve as
executive director on a less than full-time basis from January 1-June 30,
2001. I have also agreed to work with the new executive director to ensure
a smooth and successful transition.
The Executive Committee will meet on Wednesday, February 16 to discuss
timelines and a process to hire a new executive director. Based on
discussions that took place during yesterday's meeting, their preliminary
thinking is to begin the search process in the ensuing months but not
necessarily to hire a replacement by July 1, 2000. The Executive Committee
believes it is crucial that we be patient and deliberate in the hiring
process. If we can find the right person, and that person is available
early in 2001, that would be great. However, if we have to wait until July
1, 2001 to bring someone on board, that is very acceptable as well.
The Executive Committee will do everything possible to keep the
Representative Council, the membership, and staff involved and informed
regarding the replacement process.
Needless to say, I have enjoyed my 28 years as a state exec (42 years in
K-12 education). Working with the staff, state officers, members of the
Executive Committee and the Representative Council, and especially the
members at-large has been a rich and rewarding experience.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve as executive director of
the School Administrators of Iowa.
Cousin Ronnie Is Sap Of The Month
That's right, our popular cousin from Adel wins the prestigious Sap Of The Month Award.
Seems he was trying to out do last month's sap (DBT). It's great seeing our relatives live
up to our family traditions. Here is the story in Ron's own words.
"December 28 I underwent the new lasik (laser)
eye surgery on one eye. I went to the Doc for the follow-up visit on the 29th and my
vision was 20/12.5. I can count nose
hairs at 50 feet. What an incredible procedure. Twenty-four hours (to the
minute) later I was driving to pick up a prescription for Pam in the next town,
admiring the beauty of the world, seeing things I had never seen before without
glasses, doing about 50 mph and WHAMMO!!!!!! The road ended and a ditch jumped
right out in front of my car. Again my sight came into the picture. I could
see things in slow motion as the airbags deployed and smacked me in my brand
new, non-prescription, $11.99 sunglasses. I quickly prayed a PTL (Praise the
Lord) prayer and walked very slowly out of a muddy field and spent the next 6 hours in
the emergency room of Iowa Methodist Hospital. My back is a little screwed up,
the Explorer has some damage, but I'm mostly OK and I can still see! I had the
right eye done on January 3. Pam has taken the opportunity to discuss my
driving abilities.........several times. Enough for now."
A true sap story. Does he need driving lessons from a professional? DBT? I always knew
football officials have trouble seeing!!! I can name a few others who need this surgery.
Grunts Win, Grunts Win, Grunts Win!!!
Coached by the brilliant and ingenious DBT, the East Glidden Grunts smashed the Waukee
Pounders (Brad) in our second annual Tryon Fantasy Football league. Last year's super bowl
finalists (Warren and Tammi) languished at the bottom. Edgerin James led the way for the
Grunts. Hope all had fun and wait till next year. The final standings
1) East Glidden
Grunts (DBT) 2) Waukee Pounders (Brad) 3) Cleveland Rabdogs (Scott) 4) 8 Man Intimidators
(Brett) 5) Hoopalong Cassidy's (Warren) 6) Lone Rangers (LT) 7) Head Hunters (Dale) 8)
Story City Norsemen (Doug) 9) Men Among Boys (Tammi) 10) Spirit Lake Big Fish (Danny)
