Let's get some Tryon support!!

Tan man has finished up some loose ends at the U of Iowa and is heading to Glidden to work at The Villa for a few days. (Rumor is he needs the cash) He plans on heading to Atlanta and his brand new job Sept 2. Good Luck Tanner!!
* DBT Hired By NHS To Head Nevada School's Iowa Hall Of Pride Program.
Yes, the creative genius has been hired by Nevada schools to put together their Hall of Pride site. Interesting situation (a committee of one), schools have been sent information 2 years ago to get going on this and the first Major deadline is Oct. 31......Oh, NHS, like most schools, has done virtually nothing and has even misplaced most of the information and instructions. Very interesting to see what schools are expected to do. I have learned so much the last few days of what this consists of and will guarantee you Nevada's will be one of the best. It is about PRIDE you know. Any of the vast Tryon network of educators need any questions answered, I got the answers. Just email.

Pretty Darn Depressing.....
But you know, it was quite a summer.....Celebrating Donna and Bruce's retirement, golf with the brothers and Cousin Jim, a super July 4th (fun with Jim T), a wild trip to 7 Civil War battlefields and "sunny" Florida, became a grand pa, saw the Fighting River Dogs win a state championship, 2 trips to Red Wing heaven, a wonderful time with Kazuko, Maxine and the gang at RT's, Bill and Sally celebrated their 50th anniversary and Dick and Barb their 10th, so maybe I do need a break.....time to start teaching again. I sure will envy the retirees as I sit through another round of inservice though. Forecast 90+, high humidity, is there any profession in American that does not have air conditioning? except education?
I may walk around with my shirt off.........or one of those sleeveless t-shirts......

Emily Stoneman's Summer Album
It was just great seeing Kevin's family at the State Fair and now for your enjoyment, here are seven photos of Deb and Scott Stoneman's little girl, Emily. This is Maxine's grand child enjoying the summer. There is even a nice photo of Em and Jack....thanks for sending! Click Here To Enjoy (no music) She sure would fit in on the 4th at the lakes!
Memory Lane....The Iowa State Fair
Remember when the folks took us to the Iowa State Fair? A true right of passage, that some of us really enjoyed. Well, GT was nice enough to send some pictures of this year's fair, starring Kevin and his family. I am sure you will enjoy and it will bring back some of those fine memories. I put two identical shows up, help me out, which runs best on your computer set up. The first uses flash and loads instantly with bigger pictures, but hard to get music to synchronize, the second has smaller pictures, loads slower, but is easier to make. Bill & Sally Celebrate 50th Anniversary In Chicago!!
I got the following email from Mike......Congrats again, Bill and Sally!!
Mark and I flew mom and dad to Chicago to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.  Friday night Sara & John joined the crew; along with Cindy's sister, Melanie (her husband Jamie and two kids).  It was a distinct pleasure seeing Sara and John ... two wonderful people (we just hope they weren't too uncomfortable around our "spirited" clan).  Michael, Jr. and Brandon actually stayed home on a Friday night to help kick-off this weekend.  On Saturday morning, we took a limo to Navy Pier for a two hour luncheon cruise on Lake Michigan (aboard the Odyssey).  The afternoon was filled with a lot of walking and sight seeing activities (dad's feet hurt).  Saturday night we dined at Gibson's Steakhouse on Rush Street, followed by a cigar at Jilly's (outdoor club) ... Cindy spilled wine on her blouse/skirt, mom tipped over her water glass and it broke and the establishment's patron took a special table-side picture, to remember the special occasion).  Then, we ventured into the famous jazz club, Back Room and listened to two wonderful jazz sets.  The establishment got us right up next to the stage and the leader of the group spotlighted Bill & Sally ... recognizing their special milestone.  The group gave mom & dad their recent CD and then we took the limo back to Mike's house.  Dad actually enjoyed the jazz club and insisted on staying another set, but fell asleep during the limo ride back home. Sunday we just sat around and attempted to re-coup.  Mom & Dad flew home in the afternoon.  Mark is staying in Chicago to conduct some wireless consulting work for Metal Management, Inc.  He'll be working all week to move several of our IT functions towards a wireless process and protocol. It was a joyous weekend and a small gesture of celebration for our wonderful parents.  Happy 50th to mom & dad - we love you both. Michael

Back From Beautiful Red Wing
Another great time at the Charlson's pagoda in Red Wing, Minnesota. DBT, Barb, Warren and Nancy were joined by Deb and Terry for a couple of memorable days, great fun. Ray and Violet were their usual wonderful hosts. Great time and Click Here for a few pictures. You will see a vulture, eagle, puppies, barges, beautiful scenery and a sparrow hunt. Yes, WW was seen stalking the wild sparrow. (quite a match of wits) The weather was gorgeous, food supreme and the laughter hearty. School (is that a four letter word?) was the furtherest thing from our minds. Photos by WW and DBT. Man, why do we ever leave? You know, there's always something cooking at Old Ray's Place!

Technical Difficulties Plaguing the Tryon Web Page. Things were so bad, I had to reformat my entire hard drive, replacing Windows 98 with Windows XP. So far, so good. Frontpage 2002 just froze everything up all of the time and I could not update the web page most of last week. Will do better in the future. Hopefully my problems are behind me, but who knows.

Eastern Division Champion Fat Boys (DBT), only 11-11, may have something to say about it, though. #3 seed is the hated Mad Cows (WW) and #4 the darkhorse Mudville Nine (look out Seabisquit?) Shocker At Iowa State Game!!
Ok, it's Saturday night at Nevada. The students are having their homecoming dance that was cancelled. (it did make the National News, CNN) I am sitting in my lazy boy getting ready to root on the Cyclones. Feeling pretty good about the Hawkeye victory and now hoping the Clones can knock off #1, Oklahoma. I am keeping a sharp eye out for vandals, however, and they were making the rounds. I got a big bowl of chili, with corn and celery, just like Mom used to make. It was a solemn moment. Barb has not cooked since the turn of the century and because Johnny and Gwen had requested chili, she jumped at the chance to please. Barb was running around with her little vacuum, chasing the lady bugs. I was concentrating on watching them fall, trying to protect my bowl of soup, when suddenly, the ISU crowd got stone quiet. I at first thought someone was seriously hurt, but no, then I saw a sight I may never forget. It is still burnt in my brain, forever, I am afraid. Up on the big scoreboard TV screen at the stadium was an elderly couple kissing like prison parolees. Over and over, geeze, get a room. I lost my appetite (and that does not happen much) and almost lost more. Then I squinted at my TV and My Golly, it was Bruce and Donna. GEEEEEEZE. They would NOT stop. The crowd started yelling Go, Go Go, but then got a good look and began booing and chanting, Please Stop!! Booooooo (Bruce thought they were chanting Bruuuuuuce) What an embarrassment. I know, they think they looked like this photo, but let me tell you, I taped the incident and was able to copy the actual picture here. The TNT announcers were even laughing, one of them asked if the local nursing home had their own cheering section. Click Here For The Actual Picture On The Big Screen. Rumor has it that ISU officials have asked Donna and Bruce not to attend any more games, they are a bad influence on the college kids, and there is talk of ISU turning off the Kiss Cam in the future. So thanks for ruining my meal, I did put the bowl of soup in the fridge to eat after my nausea went away. It is still there.
Quick News

Wow, congrats Travis, ADM still has Homecomings? Waiting for pictures of this too.

David & Malcolm Buy 35ft. Motor Home For ISU Football Games!!!
Dale says the family has a new location for ISU pre-game tailgating. David and friend Malcolm bought a 1985 motor home to enjoy the festivities. It usually will be found east of the stadium in section S1. It has a great canopy and is a perfect place to "warm up" for the big game. Go Clones!! Click photo to enlarge.

Nevada Homecoming Cancelled!!
This Year And Next!!
What a week, what a day and it still may not be over. Upon hearing the news Friday, the students immediately called TV stations and the Des Moines Register to complain. It was fascinating to see the media reports. Nobody and I mean nobody got it right. It was not just toilet paper. It was not the same as every year. I do think it could have been handled better, but the problems started Sunday night. Major TP and some over the line stuff. (some bad slogans, threats, harassment, paint etc) The school chewed the kids out (All classes had to go out and clean up Monday a.m.) and the next night, Monday it happened again, only worse. We are in the middle of building a new track, things were put on the football field, thus crossing the track etc. (not one really bad incidents, but some pretty serious over the line stuff again) The school announced on Tuesday they would cancel Homecoming activities if this continues. Thursday night after coronation and the parade, packs of students (many) roamed around with the TP, plus eggs, shaving cream, paint etc. Most of the vandalism was typical, but some was not. The school then had the students clean up on Friday and announced the cancellation of the dance. What? No dance? Where's Mommy?...A walkout was threatened, the press showed up instantly. At the game, which NHS lost really big. (now 0-5) they did introduce the King/Queen and court. Alumni were recognized etc. So what's the big deal? No dance......ohhhh, but a radio station is now sponsoring one, so we have that now too. Let's see, Front page Des Moines Register, Second most important story on TV stations....(all the video shot was AFTER everything was cleaned up) People show up for the game, but "Hey, it doesn't look so bad." Geeze... this could make the National News.....Click Here For DM Register story....

ADM Wins Conference Title!!
Randy Wins #400!!
The Fighting Tigers swept Carroll in three straight to win the conference championship Wednesday night. Randy was also given a plaque honoring his 400th Volleyball victory. He was also serenaded by the Tryon Glee club before the match with an off key version of Happy Birthday, pretty embarrassing. Big crowd on hand, with lots of Tryons. Even the newest Tryon, Camden took part in celebration and left a special birthday present for Coach T.  Some great stories were circulating throughout the evening.....
Believe It or Not
*
Doug was sent to the emergency room, complaining of chest pains. It turned out to be Jodie's cooking....the old heart burn express. Those horse radish sandwiches with chili did not go down so well.
*Tanner is having flea or is it lice problems in his new apartment. Seems the previous tenants were keepers of exotic animals. a tiger? a crocodile? Look out for boa constructors....(I do remember the infamous Atlanta Motel, one baseball card trip.)
*Brad kept denying that he was in no way part of the Cubs fan catching that ball during their playoff game. Brad claimed that he did not pelt the poor sole with garbage. He also drove all the way back that night and got home just in time to go to work.
*Travis was nearly electrocuted, messing around in RT's classroom. Rumor has it he licked his fingers, then touched two live wires together, sap?....fork in the toaster next?
*Larry kept running to the concession stand, without purchasing anything, every 5-10 minutes he would sprint out, some thought it was restroom difficulties, but it turned out he was peaking at the big Yankee game vs the Red Sox. Yanks waited til most of us were home to win, that was nice of them.
*Randy buy his clothes from Larry Eustachy? (former ISU basketball coach)
Click Here For Slide Show, photos by Warren and Barb...genius by the genius.

Happy Birthday Randy!!!! The BIG 50.....

Dale Gets Hole In One!!
Yes, the golf Gods were smiling on Dale last week as he pumped one in on #2 at Prairie View Golf Course near Nevada. Yes, he had witnesses. Yes, he did not  buy any "rounds" for anyone in celebration. Rumor has it he hit his brand new Taylor made driver toward the 126 yard hole and it plunked in. (wind at his back?) Way to go Dale! This is the same hole that Janet had one on last year. Just think, 10 or 11 more and he will equal Brad's total, or so Brad says.

The Fighting Mustangs Are Now Ranked #6 In The Nation!!!!

Brett Is Named WSC Athlete Of The Month For November!! Cats go to 4-4 (lost 3 in the last seconds) after humiliating Nebraska Christian and are preparing for UNO, then a trip to Hawaii. Here is the write up:
The Wayne State Men's Basketball team went 3-3 over the month of November with impressive wins over Briar Cliff, York College, and state rival Chadron State. Much of the early season's success that the Wildcats have been having has had a large part to do with the tremendous play of 6-7 junior forward Brett Watson.

A native of Elkhorn, Iowa, Watson averaged 14.8 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per game in the month of November. He continues to produce solid numbers each night and provides an offensive punch.

Currently, Watson ranks 14 in scoring in the NSIC. He is ranked 12th in the league in rebounding and a solid 10th in the league in assists per game. He is ranked 11th in field goal percentage shooting at a53.7 percent clip and is ranked 8th in the league in free throw percentage with 80%.

Congratulations to Brett Watson on being named the November male athlete of the month.

Wayne State Loses Two Close Ones!
They lost Sunday night on a last second shot at St.Cloud State 72-71, then lost 90-86 to a very tough Kearney State team who they were tied with less than a minute to play. Brett scored 10 pts and 8 pts. and led the team in assists both games. Brett's next game is Saturday night.

Unbelievable, pretty scary, and Thank God!!......
Just got this email from Randy:
Last Tuesday, December 9th, ADM got out early because of bad weather.  My shop students loaded a riding lawn mower in my truck and donated it to me after the shop kids worked on it and got it running.  Travis and I unloaded the riding mower and I drove it up the hill to my dog shed.  As I was driving it into the dog/work shop the mower deck hit the cement floor.  I knew the mower deck was turned off and reached down to lift the deck to raise it to clear the cement.  As I lifted the deck...somehow, someway the mower deck engaged and caught my fingers!  I calmly told Travis we have have a problem and he saw my injury at close up.  We headed for West Des Moines in the snow storm to get emergency attention.  On the way driving down the interstate. Travis kept saying to himself: that was gross and kept saying "Dad I cannot see driving 30', Dad I cannot see 15', Dad I cannot see...everything was turning yellow to him.  Well, Travis was going into shock and I had to get him to pull over with him 90% goofy (like landing a 747 with no pilot experience).  I ended up driving myself to Mercy West emergency.  They took one look at my fingers and sent me to a specialist.  I spent 2 hours getting reconstructive surgery. Enclosed is a couple of pictures of my glove.
I have taught and worked around machines all my life and just now getting this surprise injury.  I have missed several days of school and coaching has really slowed down due to 40 stitches and my hand in splints.  Tomorrow I get my stitches out and have therapy.
This sure could have been really bad, but am very thankful I only ended up with missing finger tips.
My basketball team is currently ranked #12 in class 3A and have a 5-1 record.  We won last night 74-33.  (Coach Tryon looks weird in his hand bandages). Well happy holidays and I am just writing and informing to all that the never aging Randy has been finally slowed up.Peace to all!          RT

Saps Of The Month?
Yes, our very own Grumpy Old Men, Dale and Jim have been nominated for Sap Of The Month. Of course, Dale blames Jim and Jim blames Dale, but you make the call. Jim has been having a wonderful time in sunny Iowa the past week, with lots of eats, golf and meeting friends and relatives. Just a super time. After getting a golfing lesson from the sharks up North, last Tuesday, it started to rain. Dale rode to the golf course with Jim and they drove home. The next day, it was off to Florida, well you probably guessed it, Dale's clubs were in the trunk!! Dale was in a panic, he tried to blame Janet, but that was a stretch and he had a very important golf tournament for the weekend. (one he has been practicing for all summer) Now, his clubs were on their way to Fla. Geeze, they tried to call Jim on his cell phone, but it was not turned on. Jim was bopping on down the road (almost 45 mph at times) just whistling Dixie and trying to stay awake. Jim never did realize the mistake until he got home to Tampa. (Doesn't this guy change clothes or shower at the motel? Wouldn't he at least open his trunk and notice Dale's clubs?) Anyway, Dale had to play with Janet's shortened clubs (Betty Boop model?) complete with the fuzzy pink head covers. At the first tee, everyone laughed.  Poor Jim had to ship the dang clubs ($169) UPS to Dale, I am sure that reimbursement could be slow in coming. Estimated arrival is two weeks.....So, who is the Sap? Dale is responsible for his clubs, but Jim drove off with them? Tough call.....so Congrats to this month's Saps!! Wasn't Jim nominated for Sap the last time he visited Iowa? hmmmmmmmm.

Wonderful Time At Randy And Marjean's Pool Party!
What an enjoyable day! What fun to see June and Peg, Jim Hulsebus, the birthday girl Maxine, little Alexis Kay and especially Kazuko, last seen in Iowa in 1963! Thanks to Donna and Bruce for setting this celebration up and RT and Marjean for hosting. Great to see everyone and congrats to Tanner for his new job in the Atlanta, Georgia area!! Click Here For Slide Show..... (photos by dbt)

Unbelievable!! Wow, what a game!! Eric's Van Meter Bulldogs win 4-3 over Granville Spaulding (state champs 4 times in last 10 years)  Van Meter was leading 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs and nobody on base. Grounder to third, wild throw to first and the batter advances to third. Next batter (#9) is hit by a pitch. Eric brings in relief pitcher and the first pitch is hit to the fence, scoring both runners and now VM trails 3-2, next batter grounds out. Last inning, Bulldogs score 2 runs to win it!! Wow!! a thriller. Congrats to Eric and his fine team, the state champion Van Meter Bulldogs!! Way to go Eric!! Great weather, great crowd and great game! Click Here for link to DM Register article.  Nice Guys Do Finish First!!

Welcome To Iowa, Kazuko!!  Glidden's own, Kazuko Muto from Osaka, Japan (at least that was her name and residence in 1969) is back in the USA to visit her Iowa friends and adopted family. A Big All-American Welcome!! and enjoy our beautiful state!! (photo by WW) Don't forget the celebration at Randy's on Sunday!! See below.

Big Bats A Blazing!! VM RIPS Sioux Central 14-4 in 5 Innings!!  Holey Bat Man!! Pow, Boom, Crunch! Next game is Friday at 2:00 pm. Opponent to be determined, but the Dawgs are in the final four. Way to go Eric!! Plus, great time at The Villa, big crowd and wonderful food, thanks JJ!! Great to see so many in attendance!! Click Here For Slide Show Pictures by BarB.
Tanner Graduates Friday From University of Iowa!! Tanner graduates from the University of Iowa this Friday night- August 1st (7:30 p.m.)!  He will receive a B.S. in Leisure Services. (Hey, isn't that DBT's lifestyle?)  Last weekend Tanner, Marjean, and Randy flew to Atlanta, Georgia for Tanners first interview!  He applied at the nations' biggest fitness chain: "Bally's Fitness Center" as a personal trainer!  Very BIG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.  Job results TBA soon!?!?! Congrats to Tanner in his honor of becoming an Iowa Hawkeye Alumni!!!!!!

Big Celebration At Randy's This Sunday!! The social event of the summer!! Weather is guaranteed to be beautiful! In attendance, will be Maxine to celebrate her 70th birthday!! In attendance will be Kazuko Muto, our family's foreign exchange student, whom we have not seen since the 1960s!! Wow, and also in attendance (we hope) Mr. James Hulsebus from Tampa, Florida. (Who may give out a few of his fantasy coaching tips). What a celebration!! Let's try to get a lot of Tryons to attend this End Of The Summer Bash!! Bring your bathing suit, (except Barb who doesn't really need one). I received the following from Donna: "On Sunday, Aug. 3rd, from 3-6, at Randy and Marjean's pool! Please bring what you want to drink and a snack to share....Bruce/Donna will provide hamburgers! We're hoping to see a lot of the family there! (if you want a hamburger, we need to know the number!--just e-mail is great!)"

Sap Of The Month????
Yes, it is our wonderful niece of nieces, baby Beth (Morningside Coed)......(I know certain individuals have been trying to squash this story, but you cannot stop the long arm of the press).....Seems like Beth called (had to borrow a phone) Old Dad (Warren) the other day and informed him that she had lost her cell phone......in the lake.  Now, I know it takes a real sap (Morningside Coed) to go swimming and water skiing with a cell phone, but she did......and dropped it in the water. (some witnesses said she dropped it on purpose to get a good looking boy to help her look for it) Anyway, they could not find it, so Old Dad had to drive up to the lake and find it for her. (click here for exclusive picture of Poor Ol' Dad) Just cannot stand to be away from the phone Beth? (I thought it was just the computer instant messaging?) This could be a symptom of a major problem. (hmmm, Am I a mandatory reporter? I forgot)  It think this is called some type of disorder....like ADCD....Attention Deficit Cell phone Disorder....so I did some research on this syndrome and found other warning signs, like an enlarged ear, or shouting at people who are right next to you (Barb does that a lot) or having a finger that is constantly throbbing because of all of the dialing you do or jumping at unexpected noises and shouting, "was that my cell phone?"....I sure hope you do not sleep with it, that is a really bad sign.....but the good news is you may qualify for a government subsidy if you apply....Oh, by the way they found the phone, but gee it does not work anymore. (Warren is trying to sell it on eBay) So congratulations, Beth, on being named the Tryon Family Sap Of The Month!...(Morningside Coed)

Eric's River Dogs On To State!!!

Van Meter advances to the state baseball tournament with a thrilling win over NSRF. They spotted them three runs and then scored 4 in the bottom of the seventh!!! Great game!! They are seeded third in the state and will play Sioux Rapids at 6:00, Wednesday at Carroll. Looks like a Tryon Road Trip To Me....Go Dawgs!! Earlier this week, the Van Meter Bulldogs beat Hubbard-Radcliffe, 2-0, to win the District Championship. Way to go Eric!!!

Alexis Kay, Day Three
Going home (Saturday) in same dress Gwen wore home....Gosh......Ok nieces, remember the dollar trick? anything to get a kiss? Have to start training at a young age just who your favorite uncle is, right? The competition is tough..... Well, Grandpa Dick put together a slide show of the blessed event. Sorry about all of the attention, but it has been quite an interesting couple of days, or is it daze? It also gives me an opportunity to thank SO MUCH, the baby shower card and gift. Really touched us all seeing all of those wonderful names on the cards, especially the ones so far away. Thanks so much, and it is so greatly appreciated. Having never gone through anything like this before, it is all kinda overwhelming. Thank God for such a wonderful family.

Welcome
Alexis Kay Bartmess

Gwen and Johnny are proud parents of a bouncing baby girl. Baby Barb and DBT are now officially grandparents. Geeze... (I got that Dan Quayle, deer in the headlights look) The baby was born around 8:00 a.m. at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. She checked in at 6 lbs. 8 oz. and 19 inches tall. (Barb says she has the BIGGEST dimples, but don't all Grandmothers say that?) Rumor has it that her hair is reddish in color. Gwen is in room 465 and expected to be in the hospital until Saturday a.m. Mom, Dad and baby are doing well. (Barb is a basket case, though. She was seen running to the rest room and accidentally going into the men's room. An old man with a walker shouted and almost fell down. Nurses came running, but it was just a red faced Grandma that came sneaking out. EVERYONE and I mean Everyone laughed. What  a sap!) This just may be the most photographed baby around. Grandparents are everywhere, jostling for position to the be the first to hold the baby. Some can get pretty darn vicious. I am sure more pictures will be on the way. Click photos to enlarge. You know, I've spent the last few weeks traveling this beautiful country of ours and really enjoyed the East and the South, but I do not think you can beat the beauty of Iowa. Notice the fields of greens and wonderful little farmsteads. You know, if you close your eyes, you can almost hear the vultures singing in the trees.  Just click here to view the Shelby county farm and crops..... a Lazy T enterprise.  Rather obvious why C.L. loved this place so much.

This week I enjoyed our annual trip to the farms. Dale, Larry and I picked up Watson and we had our usual  wonderful day, acting like farmers. We always take a trip around Defiance and talk about the good old days. Dale likes to tell his stories over and over and over again. This year, I took a few photos and thought some of you might enjoy. My favorite is the Defiance church, to the left. Weddings, funerals, reunions, anniversaries...this church always seemed to be the center of attention for us in Defiance. Remember "decorating" Uncle Jim's car every time there was a wedding?, or going after Dale's? Yes, I hate to admit it, but I was the one who put kittens in Uncle Albert and Aunt Helen's car. (They were miles away until they noticed).  Lots of farm memories too, even for those of us who did not grow up there. Click to enjoy With Music (if any place is mis-identified, blame Dale)     *Click Here To Enjoy Without Music (loads quicker)

A Few Pictures Of The Florida Clan, taken by the Shiloh Boys on their trip. Some real nice ones of Aunt Helen. Thanks again to Nancy, Jim and Helen for the great time, they sure would like to have other's visit too!  Just Click Here To Enjoy!!

Great Fun As Always At Lake Stevens!!
Thanks so much Donna and Bruce!!!! You may be cleaning up the mess for weeks. Everyone had a great time, with plenty of great food, great laughs and great incidents.  Barb did her wet T-shirt thing by wiping out in the kiddie pool (always has to be the center of attention). Brad wiped out in the lake chasing a 50 cent beach ball. Eric totally wiped out (sleeping and snoring like a teacher attending inservice).  Little Cole might have wiped out the most, but always bounced back and was seen walking around totally nude and going to potty in the pool. (just like Dad at home?)  Larry got wiped out by his grandson's bucket of water and Randy wiped out by falling off the deck, later in the day. (a few too many ackky pops?) It was such great fun seeing Jimmy T, wow! Let's see didn't Diane Densmore attend last year? and Susie's family the year before? and Hulse? Anyone ever notice how they never return? It is quite a gathering of saps. Thanks for the memories, so here is this year's slide show. Photos by Barb, DBT and Dale. Click and enjoy.  Use the arrows to move on to the next picture. Man, are those kids cute. Thanks again, Donna and Bruce!!

Happy Independence Day!!

2) The Shiloh Boys In Dixie. A fast and furious trip to 7 battlefields and 4 museums in the South. Lots of photos of Southern landscapes, cannons, historical sights, hiking trails (in Code Red heat index) and numerous cannons. (Did I say that already?) Click Here.
Look for more pictures of the trip (The Florida Clan) coming soon.

Back From Florida, the Sunshine State????
DBT and Watson enjoyed a busy, 8 day, fun filled excursion to Florida and Virginia. Saw lots of things, including the Florida clan. (pictures and story will be coming out shortly) We also experienced parts of hurricane Bill (Clinton?) while in Fla. quite an adventure for the Shiloh Boys. (minus our leader, Beauregard (LT) and little drummer boy Brett)

Rumor Mill
This reporter has learned that Larry's Toshiba (or was it a Toyota?) computer, exploded the other day. Actual flames were seen climbing to the ceiling. Now, I know LT's fantasy baseball team, the Yankee Pride have been pretty hot lately, but that hot? or did he click on his stock portfolio and BOOM the whole thing went up in smoke? Oh, well...I think it was a freebie...
..

Major Computer Problems Have Put The Tryon Home Page In A Freeze! Now, I think I fixed it. Had to journey into the registry (not for the timid) and I believe I can now update this web site again. Major problems with Frontpage 2002, the program would not open and freeze the entire computer. Spent the entire day before the Florida trip trying to fix it, with no success. I think I have solved it, so hopefully, we are off and running again. Look for many updates in the future. Sorry for the inconvenience, but hey, it is free.

Great Time At Aaron's Graduation
Fun to see our relatives in the Great White North. Dan, Connie, Katie Marie, Aaron, David, Donnie, Everett and family are doing great. Doug, Jodie, Melody, Dale, Janet and many others enjoyed the fine food and beautiful weather. Congrats to Aaron and all of our graduates!

Remember that TV program with Cousin It? The big hair ball that walked around talking gibberish? Remember Lurch the butler? and the shark with the human leg sticking out of it's mouth? and Uncle Fester? Well, last Sunday we got to visit Donnie's Place. It is unique and now you can visit too. Just click here for musical slide show and if that does not load on your computer then try this link (without music). Kind of reminds one of Graceland..........Well.....maybe not. Good luck, and beware.

Aunt Marj To Celebrate 95th Birthday!!
June 25th, Aunt Marj will turn 95. We got to see her at Donna and Bruce's open house. She is doing pretty well, but her eyesight is really failing. It was the first time she has left her apartment since November. She even missed going to Defiance and Glidden and visiting the cemeteries. On her birthday, it sure would be nice for some us to remember her by sending a card or a greeting. Her address is 117 E. 6th, Apt. 2-Carroll 51401. 95 is quite a milestone and we wish her well.

You remember those old episodes of Cheers? The one's with Norm (one of DBT's idols) and the gang eating out at the Hungry Heffer (SP?)? Red meat, potatoes,  everyone overweight? Grease everywhere and it ends up burning down and the gang is depressed?.....Well, this may be DBT's new favorite spot, The Big Steer, north of Prairie Meadows in Des Moines. Super prime rib, a little pricey, but man, a steak lover's paradise. Some of the family met there and filled their plates on DBT's birthday. Oh, the sign out front welcomed us and the joint sang Happy Birthday.....thanks to Randy and gang for the embarrassing moment....photo by RT......

Really Sad News!!

This was just sent from Donna.........Emily's sister, Amy Dornbier, died in a car accident this morning. (in north central IA) Please pass the word to the family. Em's parents are Norm/Diane Chambers, 1409 230th Ave, Corwith, IA 50430. Chad/Em's address is 1151 Pinehurst Circle, Norwalk, IA 50211. Please remember them all in your prayers. Amy is survived by 2 small daughters and her husband, Dewey. We believe the services will be on Saturday at the Corwith Methodist Church. Emily also lost another sister several years ago, in a car accident. Now there is just Emily and her brother Jonathon left, out of 4 kids! It's soooo sad! The Chambers are such super people! Our hearts and prayers go out to Emily, Chad and family.

Pretty Sad News......Another set back for RT:(:(:(
Last Sunday night I took my 3 male dogs up to grandpa's (Nielsens) and left them there for a week.  Tanner was up there working for Darrell.... yesterday I get a call from them saying that BIG Tex was run over by a feed truck!  They brought the dog back to Adel to *rest in peace* (I spent a hour and half digging another grave in my pet cemetary.
Big Tex was my favorite dog....he was DNA certified, hips certified- OFA excellent, a valuable stud dog, a daddy of over 100 pups, and a great hunting dog.  Tex has been to Colorado several times, to Red Wing, Minn., state fair lots, a show-off at the lakes over July 4th!
A precious dog that cannot be replaced!
Tex is now with mom, dad, and Ray.  His wagging tail and cute expressions will entertain them until I get up there to see them all someday!        RT

Tiger Dale Finishes In First Place At ISU Golf Outing!!

All I can say is those other members of Dale's team must have been pretty darn good!! or somebody had trouble adding up the scores. Congrats Dale!!

Barb's Nephew Andy Is Back From Iraq! U.S Ranger has eaten the same MRE (Meals Ready to Eat) the last seven days, chicken, but now the wives at Fort Benning have prepared an unbelievable buffet for the returning troops.

DBT, Barb and the Charlsons are entertaining a distant cousin from Sweden, Per Olaf Book. He arrived Wednesday night at the Des Moines airport. It was Take Your Wife To Work Day!!
First time in over 30 years, Mr. T had a guest in his classroom. Only once or twice has an administrator observed and that was the 1970s. Nobody, I mean nobody, visits the dark side of the mountain, Mr. Tryon's US History class.  Well, Barb runs out of things to do with her cousin from Sweden, "So hey, let's visit a real school and a real American classroom!" On Thursday, here they are....late....I asked for a pass.....looks like tardy to me.....gave them detention and sat them in the back of the class with the other trouble makers.....Barb was given a beautiful, expensive rose for the occasion, I think I saw a tear in her eye. (the PTA was handing them out for free) She tried to give me a hug, thinking she actually got a Mother's Day gift a little early, but was brushed away. 90 minutes of US History, I think they were asleep in 10....just like the kids....Barb and Per Olaf were impressed with the wild current events, musical interludes, and photo review, but were shocked to see that a Social Studies teacher does not turn on the VCR and run it all day. (Yeah, I actually made a lesson plan, first time in 25 years) The kids were impressed, they didn't think a guy like me could ever be married to such a nice person. I explained that opposites attract, now get back to work. Barb did not answer one question correctly, but did blurt out the wrong answer a few times. She said this was much tougher than classes at ISU, but then where else can you go out drinking with the head basketball coach?  Not sure what Per Olaf thought, he was tired from golfing, his language skills struggle some and I talk fast. They both got a head full of World War Two. (notice the American Indian bulletin board left up from last year.)  It was quite a day. We left for a tour (that got me out of seminar/study hall) and the two went out and ate at the pizza place. When I got home, about an hour later,  we went out and ate again. Did I say we ran out of things to do? You need to get Barb's point of view, but it was fun to get her into MY element. (It's good to be the King) Here are a few photos of the bizarre occasion. As always, click on photos to enlarge.

The Legend Of Bagger, eh Bigger Pants
Now, Lord knows, I am not one to poke fun at someone else's misfortune. It is not like we have not all been there before. It has come to our attention that a certain, professional baseball player, had a rather embarrassing incident the other day. Seems like old Brad, was showing off for his fellow workers. "Yeah, I pitched at Sec Taylor. Yeah, I mowed them down with the fans cheering on every pitch. Let me show you how I threw the old curve ball. Yeah, I use to wind up just like this, and kick the old leg high into the air and let her rip!!!"  It sure did!! He split his pants right down the middle, bare butt and all. (I am sure everyone was impressed.... and no underwear?) Now Ol' Brad tries to act cool, like nothing happened. He backs his way into his cubicle, gets his coat and tries to pull it down. Unfortunately, he was wearing a very short ISU jacket. It covered about as much as a Nevada Prom girl's gown. He calls Julie (like she can help?) and makes his way home so no one will notice. People in the street were laughing. Dogs were following......sniffing...... He got cat calls from the construction workers. Some members of the third sex, standing in front of Peter's Pink Pleasure Palace thought it was a new fashion statement. Man, what an embarrassment! He makes it home on those cold leather seats. He gets 3 proposals for a date, 2 women at work and a fireman. Gosh, have we put on a few pounds? Hey, splitting the pants is not a good sign. A little too much May basket? Birthday cake? or is Poor Little Cole having his Easter basket raided? Oh, well hang in there Brad. The bad news is 3 different people sent me this story, any guesses? (Sorry about the picture, just couldn't resist. I have been a little grumpy since my fantasy baseball team is 0-5!)

The Real Final Four Are Battling It Out In The Tryon Basketball League. Divisional champions Brad and Dale are trying hard to keep WW (last year's champions) and DBT from the championship game. It's been a great season. Air Jordan vs Mad Monks and United We Stand vs Red Necks.....(Go Big Red!)

Congratulations To Brad (Air Jordan) and Dale (United We Stand) for being the Tryon Basketball League divisional champions. Now, however, the playoffs begin. Eight of America's foremost basketball experts will battle it out, Mano On Mano....look out for the Red Necks (DBT), Mad Monks (WW), SF Slam (Todd), Magic Huslers (Jim H), The Surf (Bruce) and Rim Reckers (Brett)....this is the real March Madness...Let The War Begin!

Funeral In Glidden......
Quite a few of us were in attendance last night and Larry/Jan/Dale/Janet attended today. I did not know very many people there, except Jean McNaught and Vera Lloyd and a few of the ladies from the church. The get together at the Villa afterward was fun. Donna, Jerry and Randy were in rare form. Photo is of Margaret at Gwen's wedding, December 7th. It was so great seeing her, she was always there for Mom and Dad, especially when Ray died and then Dad. She sure was a great friend of the family. Dale said he had a great visit with Glen Britt. (photo is of him and his wife)

Dale And Janet Return From Texas Wonderful time at the Alamo and visiting Bill and Sally's and Big 12 Basketball Tournament. I am sure the weather was a little warmer down there. As always, click photos for larger view......Photos by Dale.....

It Is Official!! Bruce And Donna Have Resigned!!  What a void that will create at WLVA!! The school gonna close????......They may have to hire numerous people to replace them. I know the tech department will be in trouble. Congrats, we are all jealous. I know I am an old booger, but I still remember the BV days, the Spanish class with Dee and Bruce, the popcorn/movies (DBT always mooching?) and the great news when Bruce got the job in Galva. Wow, been that long ago? (Oh, thanks again for loaning me your little convertible when you got back from Germany, gosh I guess I mooched that too..) Click For Announcement.

Rumor Mill..........End of an Era????  Bruce and Donna May? have resigned from WLVA today.....Wow, keep posted for verification.

Three Cheers For Tiger Woods!! All-American
We've heard a lot about pro-Saddam celebrities, so it's nice to learn of one who's on the right side. Golfer Tiger Woods has the following announcement on his Web site:

"I have great respect for the men and women fighting overseas to protect our way of life in Iraq and other parts of the world. As the son of an Army officer, I understand the strength, courage and discipline required to successfully carry out their missions in hostile environments and feel tremendous pride they are representing us.

Obviously, no one likes war. Our Congress and President tried hard to avoid the use of force, but ultimately decided it was the best course of action. I like the assertiveness shown by President Bush and think we owe it to our political and military leaders, along with our brave soldiers to be as supportive as possible during these difficult and trying times. I just wanted to take this opportunity to let our forces know that I am thinking about you and wishing you and your families the best."

Wayne State Wildcats On A Roll!! Brett helps to lead the Cats to two great road victories. 10 pts in first game and 7 in second. In attendance are WW, Nancy, DBT and Barb. The Cats dominate the second place team and win by a 17, go to 9-6 in the league, I think....No pressure on this free throw?....More on the Minnesota trip when time permits. Beth plays in Des Moines (Grand View) this Saturday night, Go Mustangs!!

ADM Gets Nipped Twice At The Buzzer!!
Lucky Randy, geeze......league leader Winterset and ADM were tied until a Husky Girl threw one in with 7 seconds remaining for a 49-47 loss, then the Tigers were leading Ballard (2nd best) by two when a girl shot a desperation shot and it goes in for a 58-57 Ballard victory....Geeze, tough stretch for the Tigers. Kids are playing well, but they do need a break or two.

Barb and Dick's Nephew Andy Is An Airborne Ranger!! We got to see Andy (Cindy and John's son) over Christmas, (well January 20th when the Charlsons celebrated) 88 soldiers started training and 13 made it. It was fun to hear what they had to do to pass their training. We are so proud of Andy. He has made over 20 parachute jumps and is now applying for officer training school. If the Iraq mess gets worse, I am sure the Airborne Rangers will lead the way. He is part of the first Ranger Battalion. Go Andy and best to you and your family. Andy is a grad of Cedar Rapids Washington and and Iowa Hawkeye! His proud mother Cindy is the administrator/retired in Cedar Rapids. (They live close to Everett Peterson, Janet's brother) Go Rangers!!!!

Thursday, January 23, 2003
The Sioux Falls Storm of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) is pleased to announce the resigning of defensive back Todd Tryon and linebacker/safety Joe Evenson. Tryon will return to the Sioux Falls Storm for his 3rd season, he also played one year with the Sioux Falls Cobras in the IFL. Todd started all 14 games for the Storm in 2002 where he recorded 48 tackles and added 4 interceptions. "Todd has been a mainstay and extremely important player in our years with indoor football here in Sioux Falls. He is in the best shape of his life and we are excited to have him for another season," said head coach Kurtiss Riggs.

Brett Scores Career High 22 Points!! Surpasses last year's 21. Cats lose 91-75 to Southwest Minnesota.  Super game by Brett (although limited minutes according to his Uncle Dick) Also,  he leads Wayne State in rebounds with 7!!  Star of the game, according to Mark, the voice of the Cats. Way to go Brett!!

A Great Time At GT and Sandy's!!  Wonderful hosts, wonderful time, and a real treat seeing Maxine there. Larry and Jan are the BIG winners of the annual Tryon Hearts Tournament (since 1963 I believe) (Although there is a rumor some were not trying real hard) The highlight? An unbelievably memorable moment with Maxine reading Sandy's (her daughter) card to the Tryons. A special thanks for helping out. The card was thanks enough (not many dry eyes) but then a very beautiful and meaningful afghan was drawn for and Lucky Larry and Jan win again. The Freedom Afghan to represent the efforts to help Steve. Wow, and Sandy, Jim, Maxine and her family are doing so much. (Lump in throat) God Bless........we were without words. Thanks for hosting Gaylord and Sandy. A few more stories later.........

Big Little Kansas Supporter Cheers Jay Hawks Over ISU!! Proud as a Jay Hawk, Max (Tammi & Craig's) gets an autograph from one of the Kansas basketball players. (Hinrich, guard from Sioux City) Little Max was also seen showing Dale a sign that read, Kansas and ESPN #1......can't imagine how excited Dale was to see that. All of this at Hilton in Ames as the Clones get clobbered on national TV, (21 pts at halftime, I thought I was watching WSC) but Kansas is tough. If putting up with Mr. Hawkeye (Tanner) isn't enough, now Dale has to take grief from Big Little Max. Been a tough few weeks for ISU fans.
